View Full Version : Tentative Channel Designations for Ohio

Below are the tentative channel designations that Ohio TV stations have selected. They have to give their other channel back. The first number is their current analog channel (NTSC), the second is their current digital (ATSC) channel, and the third is the one they want to keep. If a station is not in the list, such as WKYC in Cleveland, they are waiting for round two.

It looks like most of the stations, including all Columbus stations, are keeping their new digital channel. I imagine there is a high cost involved in changing your digital equipment. The notable exceptions are digital channels above 51 and channels 7 through 13. Channels above 51 have been reallocated to other uses, and channels 7-13 are valuable because of low power consumption.

Channels 2-6 are bad for digital TV because of interference. (Ever run the vacuum cleaner and watch channel 4 or 6?) Channel 6 has the additional burden of FM interference. All original analog channels in that range took their new one. WKYC in Cleveland got the boobie prize. Their analog channel is 3 and their digital channel is 2. They have to wait and see what comes up after everyone else picks.

Notice that all of the stations in the 7-13 range execpt channel 7 in Dayton kept their original analog channel. 75 percent of US TV stations in this range did this. This is because you can cover the same area with less than 10 percent the power of a UHF station.

Originally WSYX/WTTE wanted to keep 36 and 28 as their digital channels and give back 6 and 13. Channel 13 is the most valuable channel in the spectrum, and they would have been fools to give it up. Apparently now they are keeping 13 and 36. The only drawback to channel 13 is that there will also be a channel 13 in Huntington and Toledo, and a channel 12 in Mansfield and Cincinnati.

Here is the list. The complete list can be found at http://www.fcc.gov/dtv

Correction to "Notice that all of the stations in the 7-13 range execpt channel 7 in Dayton kept their original analog channel.":

WBNS is giving back channel 10 and keeping channel 21. Perhaps they feel they are too close to WCPO 10 in Cincinnati, or maybe they just paid a lot for that channel 21 equipment.

I believe Frank Willson from WBNS posted once on the old forum that it was due to the FCC's concern of possible interference with WCPO-DT 10 in Cincy.

When will this happen?

I would assume sometime around when the analog shutoff is scheduled (January 2009) so that the public could be informed about the upcoming changes all at once. (and in a late enough fashion to cause widespread panic by those those not technically-inclined) Does anyone know for sure?

From Reuters news today:

US Senate draft digital TV bill sets move for 2009
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051014/tc_nm/congress_digitaltv_dc

It was originally December 31, 2006, or when 85 percent of households were digital ready, whichever comes later. This bill would make the drop dead date April 7, 2009 no matter what.
