View Full Version : Best place for Dish?

I'm looking to sign up my parents for Dish (I think) and was wondering the best place to sign up. I really like the DISH Network ViP 622 box. I think it would be great for them as I could set that up on the HD tv and then configure their two other tvs to run off the second tuner + having access to all the DVR stuff. Any local places for this stuff? Or is online a better route?

I guess no one has gotten their Dish around here then.

Originally I was looking into Dish for my parents but I'm starting to think about switching from Time Warner since they just haven't been keeping up about adding new channels (I don't care how, I just want ABC/FOX/ESPN2/HGTV-HD). I never thought I'd switch but it's getting a little old from TWC. Maybe I'll keep them around for RoadRunner. Unless nakedeye makes me a good deal for DSL...

I called an 800 number for Dish. As for TW, they stink (at least in Delaware). No abchd or foxhd, and roadrunner was the slowest thing ever once they supernetted the entire town (made the entire town one broadcast domain which slowed things to a crawl). DSL from SBC or Verizon is much, much better.

I just checked and I get about 4Mbps down and 400kbps up for roadrunner. Which is fine I guess. I'd prefer faster upload speeds as I don't do a lot of downloading at the moment. What kind of speeds do you get with DSL? I had a bad experience with SBC when I first moved to town which resulted in me not getting phone service at all. I've been landline free for 5 years. Great reception from Verizon at my house.

Are we talking ADSL2 or ADSL2+? I'm game switching to ATT for both DSL & Satellite. I was unaware that they had some kind of Dish agreement. Is that where you get your HD sources? Is it a good deal to go through ATT as a one stop shop?

I actualy go with directv cause i need sunday ticket. dish's hd is now VASTLY supirior to directv's.

we are going to be deploying ADSL2+ i belive, timeline unknown, but likely by years end. 6 down, 1 up.

if you get a package, it saves you a few bucks a month, plus you only have to deal with one bill.

if you think you might go down that road, let me know, i can get you a number and give oyu my promo code

Well you've sold me. Once ADSL2+ is availible I'll switch everything over to AT&T. I live in the Darby Glenn subdivision in Hilliard off of Leap Road. I've been trying to see online if I'm able to get DSL to my house with no luck. Will the rollout of ADSL2+ be for only new subdivisions or will you be able to retrofit older ones? I'm more than happy to use your promo code since you're the one who's been the most helpful for me. Thanks again.

Ouch.

So the area is wired up for "project lightspeed". So it's only a matter of time before the upgrade is offered to the residents? Sounds pretty sweet. Any idea of the target price range AT&T is shooting for?

Now it's time to write an email to my TWC contact and let them know I'm going to switch to Dish+ADSL. Maybe at least it'll light a fire under them even more.

I thin that TW did the same thign to you as they did to me up here in delaware. they changed the technoligy of the modems and didnt let anyone know. they wanted me to go to dublin rd to pick up a new one AFTER i had to call. they refused to send out a new one with a tech so i told them shove it up thier ass. i got adsl2+ from verizon up here and all is good!

I just noticed the AT&T HomeZone thingy came out for Ohio this month. Though it sounds like you can only get the SD version for now. Do you know anything about this? It sounds like lots of fun when they have a HD version.

Well, I just signed up for the complete package and I gave them your promo code. I got a great deal where the 622 HD-DVR was only $199 plus $20 off a month for $10 months so it was basically free. Here's the breakdown from what I remember:

3Mb ADSL2+ with phone line (can't do naked)
DishTV HD Silver package
622 HD-DVR

Dollar prices flew around all over the place so I'm not sure the end total. But after the first year when everything goes to normal prices I'll be paying about $100 which is down $20 from TWC. Now I get more HD channels and a new DVR that I'm quite excited about. The Dish is being installed tomorrow morning and the DSL modem should show up by Monday. After I get DSL up and running I'll drop all my TWC stuff. I'm also looking forward to doing a Cable vs Satellite comparison while I have both. The only thing I'm loosing from this is InHD1&2 which I almost never watch. I'll give a review of everything after it's all said and done.

Thanks again for the help with it all.

Sorry to be a bit off topic...back to DSL, nakedeye, I am in Killilea subdivision of Dublin (dublin rd & emerald parkway). My DSL pro speed currently tops out at 2Mb down. My term will be up in coming September, after that I plan to get road runner. Can you give a little bit more info on this "project litespeed" thing? Thanks!

Yes your problem is that you are running on copper only so your speed is dependant on your long loop length. The CO is on Tuller , but the cbale twists around so freekin much up there I think your pushing 15000 feet.

I personaly dont know if you box (up on Chadwell behind the wall) is part of it, but I'd guess most likely not right now. If you arent on fiber currently, your not goonna be part of this any time soon. I cant check for you however cause I'm not going to be back till October. Suddenly developed seizures and they pulled my licence for a few months. SUX.

Woah, that's crazy. Are the seizures from the keg tossing?

I just found out that our neighborhood is connected via fiber. I had no idea that's the kind of upgrades you guys were doing. I had a tech come out this weekend cause my phone line never turned on since a wire was broken. Now I've got the DishTV up and running. Looks great so far. I'm quite happy. Though I'm not overly thrilled with the audio from NBC (OTA) as it appears to be lagging on some of the sports stuff I watched today. Can't wait to see how well the DSL works.

Thanks for the info nakedeye. I think i will go ahead and switch to road runner once my DSL term is up. I have heard of something called a "repeater" that could extend high speed past 15000 ft. Anyway, I am not hopeful that will be installed before fiber either.

I am paying like $25+fees for DSL pro 2MB down/512K up now, not bad...I think I could get 4-5MB down with road runner. My company just started reimburse internet fees minus tax, so RR cost not an issue anymore. Thanks again!

repeaters are generaly used for t1 and t3 circuits. I think it is too costly to set them up for the shear number of dsl circuts that a box can have in it. Most of dublin and hilliard are fiber fed and only have a handfull of straight coper fed ones. as far as loop length i think we can go up to 22000 feet now with adsl2+, but your only talking 1.5/256 at that point.

fraid not, though wish it was. turns out i have a scar on my brain from an old concussin i had 13 years ago. funny how things just pop up. belive it or not, its actualy quite controllable with medication. and sezures themselves actualy do no harm to your body, its just that you can fall down and hurt yourself.

If i wasnt off of work id install your stuff myself. let me know who shows up (if they do you got a 50/50 chance on dsl)

zelig2
07-24-2006, 09:36 AM
Sounds like no one is supposed to show up for the DSL part. I will just get a modem in the mail and connect it all up myself. Hopefully today I'll get the package and then I can bring all my equipment back to TWC. I just realized that I signed up for the locals on Dish but I'm using an antenna to get the locals in HD so there's no real reason to be paying that $5 a month extra. Time to call up AT&T and get it dropped.

Well the tec is supposed to verify sync and map at your nid on the back of your house. Like I said you have a fifty fifty shot of the tec actualy showing up, quite possibly even less. I have to admit I myself am quite guilty of this as well. They harp on us for production so much it is much faster if we only throw the pair at the box instead of showing up at the house and testing it as well.

verizon doesn't show up - they just send a dsl modem (i've installed 4 of them now for friends and family), don't know about at&t. as for the nbc audio problem, that's been going on a looooong time, we've all reported it on the forum here, but i guess they can't fix it. maybe when the new owner takes over they'll fix it.
