ABC will tackle prime-time college football next season.

ABC Saturday Night College Football will feature showdowns between top football programs at 8 p.m. ET.

Notre Dame kicks off the 12-week season Sept. 2 at Georgia Tech followed by Ohio State at defending national champion Texas the next week.

Commentator Brent Musburger will be the play-by-play voice with Bob Davie as the analyst. They will be joined by ESPN College GameDay and ESPN College Football Thursday prime-time analyst Kirk Herbstreit on certain weeks. Lisa Salters, an NBA sideline reporter and general assignment correspondent for multiple ESPN news outlets, will report from the sidelines.

"This prime-time series will be terrific for fans as more top-quality sports product comes to the ABC Television Network," said George Bodenheimer, president, ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports. "These games join a strong lineup of sports on ABC, including the NBA Finals, NASCAR's playoffs -- Chase for the Nextel Cup -- in 2007, Belmont Stakes and Indianapolis 500."

It's the first college football series in prime time on broadcast television and will also be available in high definition. The schedule does not include games on Oct. 21 and 28.

College GameDay will kick off its 20th season by originating from the site of the first two ABC prime-time telecasts: Georgia Tech Sept. 2 and Texas Sept. 9.

"The combined resources of ABC and ESPN offer unparalleled coverage of the sporting world and we're thrilled to have the opportunity to add unprecedented coverage of college football to our prime-time schedule," said Stephen McPherson, President of ABC Entertainment. "College football has extremely devoted fans and we look forward to bringing the excitement of the game to them on Saturday nights this fall."

Regarding the HD broadcasts--I guess I'll have to see them to believe the claim (I'm assuming this release came from ABC, if not, I have even less optimism).

I'm only skeptical because I e-mailed Steve Ferarra (ABC Sports Director) last year questioning ABC's HDTV decisions to which he replied (IIRC) something along the lines of "not in our short-term plans to offer more than 2-3 regular season games a year..."

If it happens, GREAT; but, like I said, I'll have to see it with my own eyes.

This post doesn't even mention HD, does it? Look for the crappy analog signal on time warner and a plain old digital signal OTA. ABC is really bad about doing college football in HD. I don't understand why they can do reg season NBA games in HD but not college football. Oh well, Sinclair would probably screw it up somehow anyway.

It does mention HD.... I'm still skeptical however...

It does say, "It's the first college football series in prime time on broadcast television and will also be available in high definition." In the past it's just been mistyped listings.

Maybe by 'series' they mean a broad range of conferences (which is very cool).

Otherwise, didn't CBS offer primetime coverage of the SEC (all in HD) last season?

I am looking forward to the coverage...just hoping that they will all really be in HD :D

Now I see the HD reference, sorry. I'm with Scott on the skepticism though. I'll bet OSU/Texas will be HD this year though. It was a crime to not broadcast last year's game in HD.

I'm late getting in on this. You all must know by now that OSU/Texas will NOT be in HD. ABC getting more games or continuing to air Big Ten is not good news for anyone.

I'll reiterate that I'm skeptical the game will actually be in HD; however, I had not heard this had been officially announced. May I ask where your info is coming from? HD Sports Guide still has the game listed in HD here (http://www.hdsportsguide.com/cfb.php)--and they are really accurate with their HD listings.

My bet is that ABC will broadcast it in HD. The real question is whether or not Sinclair/WSYX will flip the HD switch. For an OSU game I think that the odds are good that even Sinclair will get it right. Either result would not surprise me.

I'm sure the point the poster was trying to make was that the game will not be in HD on Time Warner. Everywhere still has the saturday night ABC games as being in HD.

I haven't heard this either. Where did you get this information? WSYX comes in rock solid on my OTA antenna. WTTE still has a dropout or two on occasion, but it is much more watchable than it was two years ago.

On the Bengals game Sunday night, channel 4 NBC was showing some horrible compression artifacts. It was the same on cable and OTA. I think ABC is better than NBC for their production capabilities. So what is the bad news, other than the same old Sinclair story?

The ABC schedule on ESPN's site shows that the Notre Dame game tomorrow and the Ohio St. game next week are in HD...
