Just thought I would share with everyone how quick the lamp for DLP goes. Sunday night watching Baseball Tonight and all of a succend the picture goes blank on the TV. I'm thinking the D* lost the signal so I wait and wait and wait. No picture, then I see the three lights on the front panel flashing. Just great! Well for Samsung you can only order parts thru the internet or phone. No local companies carry the part. SO, I will get the lamp on Wed's night. Plus the lamps are not cheap. So, all you DLP owners beware.

16 months after I purchased my Toshiba DLP, the same happended to me. I purchased at Best Buy, called the Product Replacement Plan phone number and had new bulb (covered under agreement) replaced the next morning. I was shocked at how fast the bulbs do go. I have had my RP Mits and have not had any issues with the bulbs in the past 6 years..knock on wood :D

I ordered a spare lamp for my HLN-507W when I hit around 2000 hours. Other then a quick swap to test the spare, the old one is still going strong at arpprox 4000 hours. I got my spare lamp from www.samsungparts.com (http://www.samsungparts.com) for around $200 plus shipping. I have a service policy too, but didn't want to have to wait for a tech if the bulb failed.

Got my lamp for around $200 plus shipping(2 day air) from samsung.com too, so not to bad. With the picture out a can't go into the service menu to see the hrs, but about a year ago I know it was around 2900 hrs. Wife was all mad about the lamp going out until I showed her in the manual that the lamps do burn out. She thought it was to last the life of the TV.

I'm assuming the RP Mits you have is of the CRT variety. They rarely just "burn out" like an LCD or DLP will, unless something goes wrong. They just slowly get dimmer over time depending on usage. They aren't actually "bulbs" in the sense like the DLP and LCD's, which burn out just like a normal light bulb.

Only problem so far is having to wait for the part to show up! I just wish we could get them easier.

Well, got the new lamp and installed it yesterday. Man what a difference! My HD is looking like HD again. Well everything is looking sharper, brighter and clearer. They say the lamp doesn't degrade over time, it just goes out. I beg to differ.

Robbie19: I was thinking the same thing when they replaced my bulb. The picture looked more crisp.
snodgrass23: Thanks for clearing that up. Quick Question.. What can be done after the Mits gets too dim to stand? Can the lights be replaced?

Only if you feel like spending close to the amount it would cost to just replace the thing with a Microdisplay (DLP, LCD, LCOS, ect).
3 CRT's = $1K (roughly...)
Labor = $300 - $400
--------------------
$1400 and you still have a 6 yr. old (or more) TV...
List price recently of a KDFE42A10 = $1499

Most lamps are rated to their half-life. The point where they are producing 50% of their original light. Off the top of my head, my Samsung is rated for 8000 hours. The dimming is usually such a gradual change over the life of the bulb most don't notice it until they are forced to replace it.
By the way, just because the lamp light comes on doesn't mean the bulb is completely toast. The lamp light just means the circuitry detected the current draw of the bulb to be out of range. Many people claim to have been able to limp along on a "bad" bulb for days by heating it to 125-200 degrees (F) in an oven, then quickly installing and powering it up while warm, then not powering it down until the replacement bulb arrives.

Well all three lights can on blinking with no picture (TV, Lamp and Temp light). I pretty sure that means the lamp is out. Reading on most material on this lamp rates the lamp around 4000 hrs which is about how many hrs I had on it.

snodgrass23 can attest to what happened at my house tonight.... Okay, the last couple of days I've noticed that my Panny hasn't been as bright as normal. I even commented on it last night to my wife while watching the NBA playoffs.
Fast forward to tonight--I'd just downloaded UNO for my 360 and began to play when I noticed that my Panny was looking really dim. snodgrass23 and his girlfriend came over to go see Davinci Code with us and I asked them if it looked dark to them--as soon as I said that, the lamp blew out! I thought I had mistakenly shut the TV off---but no, my lamp light was flashing.
I called Circuit City and the Advantage Plan paid for itself in one phonecall--the new bulb is on its way.
So, I have no 360 to play or HD to watch (well I could watch it on my ViewSonic, but it's really small), and that's why I'm posting so late.

another one bites the dust. That stinks Scott! Unreal that we have had 3 bulbs go on 3 different brands in a matter of 3 weeks. They say things happen in 3's, I hope that is the last of it for the TV bulbs.

The first lamp on my Sharp XV-Z9000U DLP front projector died at around the 700-hour mark, about two years ago. That lamp was rated at 2000 hours. I had no trouble getting a replacement. I ordered online from Big Ten Media.

I've been through 1 D-ILA lamp in a little under 1.5 years.
I have the extended warranty - and I was able to hit our JVC Rep up for a "freebie" as a back-up. That way, if (when) I lose the next one, I have one to pop in while I'm waiting for the extended warranty to replace the one that blew:)
Connections rule.

Yeap. I would say at least that. I haven't priced a rear projection tube, but I replaced 2 of the 3 tubes on my front projector when I got it and they were @$400 each plus a core deposit.

Replaced my lamp yesterday afternoon--and WOW, talk about a difference. I'm positive that my Panny has been slowly dimming over the past 6-7 months without me really noticing it until shortly before it went out. It's amazing what your eyes get adjusted to over time--now it's like I have a new HDTV again http://hdcolumbus.net/vb-hdtv/images/icons/icon14.gif

Nope, just popped off the front cover, pulled out the old, put the new one in, reset the lamp timer (the old one had about 8,000 hours on it), done. I was really thankful I didn't have to pull the tv out.

All this lamp burn out talk got me to thinking (never a good thing) about how many hours are on my DLP. Well I am at 4230. Wondering how much longer I will get out of it before it pops.
I do know the set is not as bright as when it was new. I remember it was almost painfull to look at it in a dark room.
Maybe when the bulb goes I can convince the wife we should just get a new 1080p set :D

That is a good plan on keeping the Samsung, getting a new bulb and getting a new 1080p.
What if you tell the wife that something is wrong with the Samsung, have a buddy (that she does not know) come over as a TV repair man and tell you that it can't be repaired. Go and buy a new 1080p, then tell her that you have not given up on the Samsung and have another friend come over to look at it and he tells you that he can fix it! Now you have a DLP for your bed room and 1080p as well.

Well.... I think my set has bigger issues than the lamp... It blew out again after just one week. The earliest that CC can get someone out here is Tuesday--so it looks as though I'm without HD for at least the next couple of weeks (assuming that the tech needs to order a part, schedule a time to come back out, yada, yada, yada) :(

If CC can't fix it, they give you the full amount back ++ any amount left on the life of the Advantage Plan. I'm not sure what they would do about the stand (the stand was purchased separately; but, only fits my model). With the costs of HDTVs down, I'm sure I could get a pretty nice set for what I paid for this model 3 1/2 years ago.
Apparently, this model has been plagued with issues like mine with lamps going out early, ballasts needing replaced, etc. From all of the research I've done, I've found that once the set begins to experience problems, it never works properly again. Replacing the lamp and ballast 3,4,5 times in a year is not uncommon.
The worst part of it is, Panasonic won't admit there is a problem (even though they released the next version of the set less than 6 months later). I'm lucky that I purchased that plan--some consumers without plans have put over $1,000 of work into the set--only to have it still suck.
I'm going to try like hell to get CC to replace it--but I'm sure it's going to be a long summer.

Got a phone call today from the warranty department @ CC informing me that the tech would not be available until JUNE 14th!! I've been on the phone for almost 2 hours trying to get this straightened out. I've been hung up on when they were "transferring" my call up the chain 3 times and when I finally got in touch with a rep that wasn't in New Delhi, she tried her best to keep the call alive--but I got disconnected after 35 minutes of being on hold. When I called back, an arrogant rep gave me an actual number with secret extensions I could enter to reach the corporate office--it turned out to be the EXECUTIVE President's office VM---like I was leaving a VM for her! I am about 5 seconds away from posting a BOYCOTT CC banner right on the front page of this forum...Thanks for listening to me rant.
I'm becoming even more discouraged after reading a few of the posts at the badbusinessbureau.com (http://badbusinessbureau.com/results.asp?q1=ALL&q2=&q3=&q4=&q5=circuit&q6=&q7=&submit2=Search%21Circuit%20City)

Scott: I sympathize with you. Sorry to hear what is going on with CC. I would have left her a message about the treatment that you have been given, how you obtained her number, what you purchased, the issue, and how you are "well" connected within the Columbus HD community and will make your experiences with CC public, then leave your cell phone and ask her to please help. I would have to believe that a person at that level would make every attempt at satisfy your needs. I know I would.
Wow man! how unfortunate, keep us posted and best of luck!

I tell you what. The new HHG over at Easton has some models out that I have not seen before in their other stores. Also, I was in Audio Encounters yesterday and saw a nice 1080p in the show room, plus some other great looking sets. To tell you the truth the 1080p didn't look any better than the other sets in the store.

I don't want to get into a big discussion about this, because I'm sure Scott wouldn't like me shilling for my company on his forum, but all HHG locations should have the exact same models. I actually opened the Easton store as Sales Manager (I even helped wire the HD wall), so I put most of those TV's out myself.
They all share the same inventory on the video side. The appliance side is a bit different though, with the "Fine Lines Easton" part and all.

Well, I have to up date this. Looking at when this thread first started it has not been that long, but guess what I am noticing the picture to dim again and its just not as clear. I think I am going to get a new lamp just to on the save side. Also, I am leaning on getting a new TV. I have the wife pretty much agreeing with me on this one. Right now I think I am going to go with the Samsung HL-T6187S LED DLP 1080P Slimfit.

whatever happened as the end result with scott and the panny? I hadto relamp my NEC LCD projector thats in my bedroom in february and the lamp got real dim after only 60 hours so they sent me a new one free of charge but is it common to figure the end of life of these units once the lamps go out? sure seems i hear a lot about relamping not being successful in the long term. the Optoma in my greatroom is up to about 1500 hours and its still good although I do note that its not the eye killing brightness it was when the unit was new 2 years ago. I think I'll buy a new bulb to keep around so i dont end up dead when football season starts.. it is supposedly rated at 5000 hours on ECON mode which is where I have had it set since i bought it. isthe number of starts also a factor in bulb Life? saying i use it only an hour at a time meaning i have say 800 starts whereas some people with 4000 hours may have the same number of starts? doesthat affect lamp quality?

Mine went out again about two months ago--this time I was preventative and called as soon as I started to notice a change in the PQ (dim, longer time to turn on, etc.). The lamp actually blew the day the tech came out. I can't believe that 3 lamp replacements in less than a year doesn't warrant something other than replacing the lamp. The $500 I spent on the advantage plan certainly paid itself off--after about $1,000 in parts and labor. The plan is up in December and it's about $350 to continue for another 2 years--no doubt I'm signing up for that. Even if it doesn't ever go out again, I'm up $250 :D

Got the new lamp a few days ago. Yep, it makes a differnces! The picture is soo much clearer and sharp. HD ch are looking great now. So I think I will replace the lamp every 18 months now and I kept the old lamp just in case the new breaks. After 18 months of use this last lamp had about 3000 hours on it. Also the cost of the lamp has gone down by about $100.
