I'll be moving to the Lewis Center area within the next couple of months, and it looks like Insight is pretty much the only option as far as cable goes. Anyone know what hardware they use for the HD DVR and maybe some specs? I have the TW SA8300HD right now, so I'm wondering how Insight's offering compares.

Thought about DirecTV at all?

Wow, that bad eh??

I actually was a DirecTV customer up until about 4 months ago. I finally decided to go HD, and I couldn't justify shelling out the cash for one of the HD-TiVo powered units with the upcoming conversion to mpeg4 and the complete lack of information regarding the new D* HD DVR units. Of course, it seems even worse now. $400 to RENT an HD DVR???

I figured I'd go with cable until the new D* arrives and gets some reviews.

I still have two D* TiVo boxes in the basement just in case...

Anyway, does anyone know what Insight uses? I'd like to do a little research while I have the time.

I received a Motorola 6412 Phase III box with HDMI (older boxes had DVI). I can't complain to much. It makes a good match for my new Sony KDF-E42A10 42" Rear Projection HDTV. My tv has an OTA tuner, and I really cannot tell the difference in watching HD locals vs. through insight with this DVR.

Great article here w/specs:

Note, when I received the box back in January, I believe, I was able to use the 30-seccond skip hack. Now, Insight has done at least 2 firmware updates, and the hack no longer works :(

I gave my parents my old Series 2 Tivo, since it'll be forever until Tivo releases their series 3 w/HD capabilities. This box is no Tivo, but it's pretty solid with dual HD tuners. The box has all sorts of capabilities (even a cable modem built in!) but many of the features are turned off. I really wish they enabled the SATA for external disk storage.

Check avsforums. Lots of info there, including how to extract HD to your PC via the firewire port. I haven't tried this yet.
