Possible PM spam

I had the following PM this morning from user ebuyhdtvs:

8 - New place to buy HDMI Cables from....$3 - Today, 10:50 AM
I found a place for HDMI cables, I have bought about 12 from them...

They run about $5 delivered to your house and never had issues...I know I have seen quiet a few other places, but thought I would pass along one more...

This person has no posts, and the PM asked for receipt confirmation. Just wondering if anyone else got a copy... I started a thread sometime back asking about places to get HDMI cables -- I don't know if it was sent to just me, or everyone.

I also received the PM. I cancelled and did not send the confirmation response. If you allow the response the user knows that he has a valid e-mail address for future mailings.

The user (ebuyhdtvs) has been banned. They registered almost a month ago. Is that the same user everyone got it from?

I am assuming that its spam also, since i have no idea who it is. I also did not accept the receipt i clicked the X and then went and deleted it.

Serendipity has also been banned. I changed the human verification method to see if it helps with the spam.

Not to mention the fact that his cables are more expensive than the ones you find at monoprice.com and amazon.com!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just pruned over 20 banned users--15 of which have registered in the past month or so and 90% of them had .gmail or .yahoo accounts (eludes our system of not allowing over a thousand known bot domains to register). This leads me to believe that they were not bots. We'll see if the extra HVP question Jim put into place holds. If not, we'll look into not allowing users with less than x amount of posts to send PMs.

vBulletin 4.0.2 is scheduled for release in early February and I had scheduled for 4 to be installed the third week of February before our license expires again. This version has advanced bot/troll/spammer mechanisms built into it.
