Hey all, and especially nicholc2 because you also own a pn50a550. Is it odd to be getting image retention (non-permanent) on a plasma almost immediately? As mentioned it's not permanent, but this seems like a very very short time frame to be getting image retention. If I put it on say...ESPN for about 5 seconds the image will ghost for a little while afterwards. again is this normal for a plasma or this set in particular? And also, any idea on what timeframe would be safe to prevent permanent burn-in?

Yes, honestly, it is odd depending on how many hours you have on the TV. I used to get that some when the TV was brand new, but the normal break-in hours (200 or so), it stopped completely. I can even throw up my calibration patterns now and not get IR.
What settings are you using?

Standard/Movie
Cell light 10
Contrast 79/78
Brightness 49/54
Color 46/47
Tint G51/R49
Black Adjust Off
Dynamic Cont off
Gamma -1
The tv has probably around 4000-6000 hours on it.
Usually I use movie, unless it's really bright in the room in which case I'll switch it to standard. During games I'll switch Dynamic Contrast to low sometimes because I like the look a little better.
For reference, while checking the settings I switched to ESPN (PTI) and when I turned the TV off, you could lightly see the side scroll that PTI uses when all the pixels went "black" before shutting down. (Probably 5 minutes)

I'm not sure why it's doing that. The values you are using are definitely not torching the set by any means. Movie is better than Standard to keep that from happening, but you probably know that. I'm at a loss. Mine doesn't do that or at least I haven't noticed it.
Have you tried running the image retention screens from the UM? When i've had IR in the past, I've used the scrolling bars.
I would say as long as it isn't staying there permenantly, you may have to just put up with it. Have you tried Samsung?

Yeah I have run the scrolling bars, and it goes away...it takes a little while but it goes away. I can try samsung, but I didn't think they would be able to do much about it, since IR/Burn-in isn't covered by the warranty. I guess it wouldn't really hurt to try though.
It just seemed really odd that it occurred that quickly. And scared me a little bit because I wasn't sure if the IR was occurring that quickly if it would also mean that the possibility of burn-in would occur more quickly as well.
Edit: Just live-chatted with Samsung. They were worthless. First pretty much copied out of the book about static images...blah blah blah. Then said IR has no timeframe, but didn't quite get that my issue was that it was happening faster than it should be not that I wanted to know how long it will take. Then told me to use pixel shift (which I do) then linked me to their standard webpage that tells you how to turn on pixel shift and how to use the white scrolling screen. They never even attempted to my answer WRT if the quicker occurring IR would be a cause for concern for burn-in or if it's possible burn-in would possibly also occur quicker.
