View Full Version : What type of HDTV do you own?

I know that everyone has probably at one time or another listed their setup; but I'd like to see what the majority of HD Columbus has. So cast your vote!

(you can also post what your setup is if you'd like)

AND, if you have two or more HDTV's, just check all that apply (it will let you).

Mits 65" CRT RPTV bought nearly 6 years ago. 1080i is all I've got to choose from on component inputs. No 720p, no 1080p, no VGA, no DVI, no HDMI.

Still a great image though. Once it dies I'll probably get a front projection system. I've got a few of friends who've built projectors by hand. Not bad results for rooms that you can control the lighting.

I have a Samsung HLN4365W1 DLP RPTV....bought it on May 23rd, 2004, received it on May 29th, 2004.

Because accessing the service menu resets the clock, I check the lamp timer when I update all my clocks twice a year :o

It read 3832 hours.

I'm trying to decide if it is time to invest in a spare bulb, or if when it goes...that it might be sufficient excuse to buy a new TV

Though still being unemployed does kind of make either thought hard to go with.... :(

But, if I were to go with a new TV, it'll probably be an LCD flat panel.....somewhere around the 50" size (depends on bezel thickness, since my current criteria will call for it to fit my current furniture....though that could change....given that its Nexel shelving.... ;) )

wildman,

that's one hell of a bedroom tv.

It is great having it in the bedroom as I can watch all those late night west coast games and actually read the scores and the bottom line info without squinting. :)

The 65" looks small now compared to my new setup (note - I still have to mount the front speakers and hide the wires) :

wildman,

Great set up. Are you doing this your self or professional install? I just had my basement finished off with the Owens Corning Living basement system and I am looking to put in something like you have.

I looked at the OC basement system and it is sweet. Should be a great room for acoustics...I just couldn't justify the added expense as they wanted way too much $$$$.

I did the demo on the basement. It was real mess to start with. The remolding was contracted out and done in less than 2 weeks by 2 guys. I did all of the staining and painting and a friend of mine is an electrician and we are still working wiring can lights and outlets. I set up the projector and the screen and ran all of the associated wiring - speakers, 30 ft HDMI, 30 ft component, coaxial for dish and OTA attenna. Its still a work in progress as I need to mount the front speakers and center. I am shopping for HT furniture as well. Problem is that at ~80% complete I am moving too slow since I am enjoying the NBA playoffs, Stanley Cup, NASCAR, and too many movies. :)

Looks good. I got a real sweet deal with OC and they were in and out within 6 days. Had the money because of inherited from my anunt. The room acoustics are outstanding! Over-all the price is very comparable to traditional finishings. Would like to get more specific on your screen and projector. Thanks!

Robbie -

Projector is Pansonic AE900U its a LCD projector and is one of the highest rated for its price point (cheap). If you look around on AVS or HTS you can find all kinds of info on it. Panasonic has been offering $400 cash rebates and $300 blockbuster gift cards.

The screen is from Carada. Its a 1.78:1 format (native aspect ratio for the projector) and 110" brilliant white material with a gain of ~1.4. Again AVS or HTS has lots of info on this company. I shopped around quite a bit selecting a screen and I highly recommend these guys. Their quality and service is top notch.

If you have specific questions drop me a PM.

Thanks for this great forum -- good to have something local. I'm new to this whole HD thing -- just got the TV in late January -- didn't have an OTA ATSC tuner built in, so I watched the Super Bowl in "stretch mode".

Current equipment:
Mitsubishi 55819 RPTV (bought used for $375! The previous original owner had a bee in his bonnet about getting a 60" plasma before the super bowl -- let this go for a song.)
Samsung SIR-TS160 NTSC/ATSC receiver (refurb - $42)
Insignia el-cheapo DVD/VCR from BestBuy. It's a piece of junk, but lets me up-convert the DVD so it looks pretty good through the component-in on the Mitsu. I think it does line-doubling, and sets the aspect-ratio correctly for the TV. The VCR side will record off the 480i output of the Samsung -- looks pretty good for a videotape, when recording an SD signal.

Being cheap, I plan to put together some kind of MythTV based PVR at some point. Just using this setup for OTA and DVDs.

I got the Samsung a couple of weeks ago - what a difference! I'm near Lancaster, and can receive 4,6,10,28,34,51 in digital, off a 10 year old Radio Shack outdoor antenna. I also have a 1-in, 4-out RS amplifier. The auto-scan on the Samsung found all of the analog equivalents of the digitals listed above, and a handful of others. 4,10,28,34 analog have pretty good signals, 6 analog is bad (fuzzy), 51 analog practically unusable (most of the content on 51 is unusable, too, IMHO). What's strange is that 6 digital is at 100%, as is 51 digital. 34's digital channels bounce between 77% and 85%, and exhibit occasional pixellation and audio drop out, but look pretty good most of the time.

I'm pretty pleased with the Mitsu -- it has some convergence issues on the left side, and exhibits the well-known "red push" problem. I've played around with the built-in 64 point convergence, but can't seem to get it to "stick". It probably has something to do with the fact that I'm still getting all of the connections settled, and move the Mitsu around to get to the back. That probably blows the convergence off every time.

I haven't decided on getting sat or cable yet -- as to cable, I'm in a TW acquired Adelphia area -- they're still using tin cans and string for distribution. I'm sort of torn about satellite/cable anyway -- my thinking is why pay for 50 channels of crap when I can get 10 digital channels of crap for free, OTA? :D

The Earth's magnetic field is very likely working against you. CRTs still make the best picture but they can be pain to set-up properly.

If you must move any CRT away from the wall, to set registration and purity, try to keep it pointed in the exact same direction as it is normally.

If you still see a noticeable change in registration or purity when it's moved back into viewing position I'd suggest using a compass and watch the needle for any magnetized objects which might be around or behind the set.

Hope this helps.

I worked there for several years as a sales manager and just left this month......but yes, I do love many of their products still. Ya gotta love 2.5lb Toughbook with a true 7hr battery life and 3yr warranty :D

Plasma wise, Pioneer is better in some areas on certain sizes, but the costs are out of sight and skew the value of what they offer IMO. Especially considering my discount. 65" TH-65PZ750U for about $5,500 including free shipping.

My brother bought a Samsung P58A550, 58" plasma last year. He paid about $2,200 which I thought was a good deal at the time. I checked out the reviews and they were generally favorable, but the main knock on it was that it runs hot. Nonetheless, I loved the HD picture so much that I toyed with buying one last year. I got a flyer last week for the HHGregg Super Bowl Weekend Employee Sale. The newer model, the P58B550 was on sale for $1488, so I grabbed one.

I have to say I am really impressed with the picture, especially live sports. The only negative I have against this unit is the speakers, which sound tinny and cheap. (I loved the sound on my Panasonic 32" 4:3 analog TV). But, hey, for the price you can't have everything. I guess another negative is that it's 60 hz, but I can live with that for the price.

Here's something neat I found out. I hooked up my Zenith DTT-901 converter box along with the VCR and DVD player. Since this is a digital-to-analog converter, I wasn't really expecting much, picture-wise. Much to my surprise, the OTA pictures look "okay" on a 58" TV. I was flipping back and forth between WBNS on the converter box and WBNS digital for comparison and it wasn't too far off. The picture coming from the converter box looks far better than the picture you get from analog cable!

The reason I thought I'd tell you guys is that this is a pretty respectable (and cheap) way of getting OTA signals for both the LPTV stations and out-of-market signals (Dayton) which aren't on cable if you aren't using a cable box. I got WDEM, WHIO and WBDT without much hassle and was pretty satisfied with the results. This method eliminates the hassle of using an A-B Switch if you don't have a free coaxial cable input.

I got my HDTV in a different era, lol.

It's a 30" Samsung CRT 1080i HDTV from 2005. At that time, it was the only HDTV with a built in ATSC tuner under $800 (it was $600). As a college student working 3 part time jobs, it was a necessity to keep it as cheap as possible.

I can't tell you how glorious it was at the time. You have to understand, it's a crappy TV to be sure, but 99.9% of the time, no matter how great the TV set was, there was hardly any HD options. So it was particularly funny to me when someone with a substantially nicer TV set came over and was shocked at the clarity of my 30" 1080i picture.

And as I continue to be a grad student, I am still stuck with that TV, lol.

I've been really tempted to get a Panny plasma, but I keep waiting for them to work out the little kinks in 24p cadence and such. I really want a 65", but can't afford it. A 55" is possible, if I save up for a few months.
