Well, I was tired of seeing everything passing me by with Blu-ray--so I got a PS3 yesterday. Got a pretty good deal on it through Amazon. I'm liking it so far. I'm actually posting this from their browser now with my 7-year old RF-Versapoint keyboard with built-in mouse. Works like a charm!

I watched my first BRD last night and had some issues with the absence of the color blue. I didn't notice it on the main PS3 screen because I just assumed the PS3 had gone with som funky pastel color choices, doh. Well, I somehow had put the blue analog input into the blue component input (yes, i don't have HDMI yet), so there was my problem.

My gamertag is hdcolumbus, although I don't have any games for it yet :dunno:

I also figured out to make the browser take up my full screen and increase the resolution so that I could actually see stuff without having to use the zoom :)

Congrats. I toyed with the idea of getting a PS3 as a BluRay player but my wife didn't want another console in the house. Last generation we had a PS2, Xbox and Gamecube this time we've held back to only the 360 and Wii. I ended up with a Panasonic bluray player as that was more acceptable to the wife. I've been toying with the idea of selling it on ebay and picking up the newer BD35 that they came out with for the BD Profile 2.0 but I don't care too much about doing online stuff through my movie device.

Speaking of new features. Have any of you downloaded the new "Home" feature yet? I did last night, set up my avatar and cruised around the mall and bowling alley. I found it a little weird--there were people chatting sitting around, I saw clear people (not sure what's up with that) and people just standing there. I played a couple of the arcade games and pool--meh. Surely this isn't ready for primetime because of the beta tag everywhere. It looks a place that Sony gets to pimp their products--games, movies, etc. and where people are going to shell out $$ for extra hoodies and haircuts :dunno:

Yeah, home is pretty boring at this point. It just looks like a big marketing ploy. I didn't have real high hopes for it anyway, honestly. I never could understand the hype around it.

I thought home was pretty lame, i did bowl a game with some friends, was not bad, you can directly call somebody on your mic and talk normal by doing r2 first, when i did that, it was not bad. I am part of a clan(twwclan.com) and we do have a club but we just starting using it, it is still hard to launch into some of the online games... I will use it if people want to go but i will not go out of my way to use it.... I would rather do the real thing!

Just broke down and got the PS3 today. Have not even purchased any games yet, picked up the Dark Night. I just could not get the stand alone BRD, the feature of being able to play games put me over the top. I was having some trouble with Surround Sound, but figured that out.

I've placed an order for the PS3 Slim. Should get it by Thursday. The recent price drop made it easier to buy. Plus I'll sell off my Panasonic BD30 player to help fund the transition.

I'm looking forward to the DTS-MA light turning on. That alone is worth $300...

Actually, that won't be on for ya with the PS3. It does all the processing and outputs PCM. But you'll still be able to get your DTS-MA. :D

The new PS3 Slim is able to do bitstream output as they updated the HDMI chip.

WOW! That's cool! My receiver doesn't support that, but very nice to see they've updated that!

Anyone got Uncharted they'd be willing to let me borrow? I figure it's been out for a while so it might just be sitting on someone's shelf. I really want to try that one and Little Big Planet out.

Then I'll probably download FFVII off of PSN and finally play the whole way through the game.

I rented Uncharted from Blockbuster and beat it in a week..
I'd also highly recommend renting/playing inFamous.
And in a week or so after i finish Mass Effect (360), i plan to rent Arkham Asylum for ps3.

I have a "7.1" receiver which supports all those fancy schmancy audio types on bluray discs, TrueHD and the whatnot... I've had my ps3 plugged into it via HDMI for about a year now... I've always been under the impression I am hearing the DolbyTrueHD source and not some sort of downgraded Dolby Digitial version...

am i wrong?

LPCM is not always equal to bitstream
by Ben Drawbaugh posted Jul 11th 2009 at 8:38AM

This is an on going debate on certain forums and for good reason. The fundamental question is where should you decode your lossless audio? In DVD players we almost always decoded compressed audio in the A/V receiver, but when it comes to Blu-ray features like Bonus View, there is at least one specific reason to decode in the player.

It really come down to your system. If you have a great A/V receiver and a great decoder in your player, than it shouldn't make a difference where you decode. But saying that LPCM is always equal to bitstream just isn't correct. Sure, the decoder must be able to decode perfectly to be certified and get the sticker on the box, but that doesn't mean the player's analog circuitry (if you are using analog outputs) or HDMI chip doesn't screw it up after the fact. It also doesn't mean that your A/V receiver treats LPCM audio the same as it does audio that is internally decoded. Some think its silly to find satisfaction in seeing that little logo on your A/V receiver light up when it receives DTS-HD, but there is some comfort to knowing that the signal at least made it to your A/V receiver before getting mucked up. And lets face it, if your A/V receiver can't be trusted to properly handle the audio, does it really matter what signal it received?

The long and the short of it is that "it depends," meaning it comes down to your equipment and your preferences. We think it's a good idea to choose equipment that offers multiple options so you can discover the best combination yourself. Although we do admit that 90 percent of even the most elite HD snobs can't distinguish a difference, but since when have we let that stop us from obsessing over the ultimate setup?

Meh... whereas it may be worth it to spend the $300 so i have a bluray player in the bedroom, and can go to bed early w/ my schoolteacher girlfriend but play games still until late at night... it definitely isnt worth $300 to have a light come on.

(bigger hard drive is also a good consideration.)
