Went to the newly opened Buffalo Wings & Rings (http://www.buffalowingsandrings.com) at 23 & Powell Rd the other day and boy, they have a lot of HD TVs. And as usual, many (but not all) of them are showing SD sports.
I just got a reply from a different restaurant in the Powell area that probably tells why we see so much stretch-o-vision on expensive TVs in bars:
Just wanted to respond to your e-mail regarding the HD tvs located within the restaurant. You are correct about HD costs per tv is usually low, especially Directv because I have all HD tv boxes at home. However commercial HD especially through Directv (not sure about other providers ) allows for two HD boxes at a very low cost, however each additional tv box with HD is $150 per month. We currently have HD behind the bar as well as the big screen plazma (sic) on the wall.
So there you go. $150 per TV per month is asininely high for HD. It would be hard to sell enough beer to cover 20 or 30 extra boxes.
p.s. in case you were wondering, Buffalo Wings & Rings is decent. Very saucy wings, floating in sauce if that's the way you like 'em (plenty of paper towels). But they're not hot at all to this Texas boy; next time I'll tell them to go with their atomic and add more heat on top (which they can do). Their atomic is nothing like Quaker Steak's atomic (http://quakersteak.securetree.com/Products/Bottles-of-Sauces-Award-Winners/Atomic-Wing-Sauce.aspx) which is insanely stupid hot.
