View Full Version : WCMH NBC4 HD Sound Problems?

Anyone notice that programming on WCMH HD (NBC4) has had a hollow/tinny sound lately (say for a about a week now)? The problem is the same on both my boxes (TWC box connected with component and Dish box connected with HDMI).
Yep, I noticed it, too, while watching the Steelers/Jags game last night. I tuned in to 103.9 FM for the Steelers Radio Network audio (I like Tunch, Bill, and Wolf WAY better than Madden, anyway!). The time delay was a little disturbing (the audio was about 3-4 seconds ahead of the video), but less disturbing than listening to Madden on a 16kbps MP3 stream!
I called the station at half time, picked the entry for Engineering, but just was able to leave a voice mail.

Yes i noticed this also, I was hoping someone would post on it lol. I started hearing the "Hollow" sound around Sept 29th while i was watching Heroes, and Life. It has continued all week. I plan on calling the station also tomorrow. If anyone gets any info plz let post here so i can keep up to date on this situation.

I did call the engineering dept today and they said they have someone working on the transmitter right now. Now if that means they know of that exact problem i am not sure, but the guy i talked to just kept saying they have someone workign on the transmitter now, so maybe that will take care of it.

They sure seem to have a lot of trouble with these digital transmitters, don't they? Analog transmitters appear to be far more reliable.

I have a bedroom tv with satellite only and a great room tv with satellite and OTA. Lately, the signal (audio and video) between the OTA in the great room and the satellite in the bedroom have been in sync during the evening news. But at other times it's like it's always been, that is the OTA is a few seconds ahead of the satellite feed. Weird stuff going on at WCMH.

I watched a DVR recording from 8-9pm last night of Knight Rider and the audio was popping and cracking thru the whole show. It was very annoying.

As of Today 10-9 i am still have this issue. I just called nbc engineering dept again and they said they will check out their encoder to see if anything is off.
I have eliminated my equipment from the problem, heck it even has the bad audio on my regular tube tv from my 722 receiver. Dish said there is no problem with that receiver, it has to be comming from nbc.
I have Dish network and i have the 722 receiver. I have one HD TV and the other one connected to that receiver is just a 27" tube tv. Of course with dish we have the Antenna for the local hd stuff, but on my 2 other televisions upstairs with just the normal dvr nbc sounds fine. The only problem i have is with the HD audio signal on the two televisions that are hooked to the HD DVR.

Last night's SNL (thursday?) from 930-10 was terrible.
I don't know if it was the CMH feed or my 622 dish OTA signal.
a Pre-echo? was on the show. where you could hear two separate audio streams. One was ahead of the video sync. not observed for commercials or on the office from 9-930.
crazy.

It has to be the WCMH signal feed. Same (ongoing) sound problems last night on TWC (NBC4 HD Channel 704). Not sure if the problem is the same on the SD channel (haven't checked it out).

Note I got on 10/10/08 from WCMH:
Hi, Mr. Lewis,
Thank you for your message about NBC 4's audio on its digital channel.
I apologize for your inconvenience. We had a problem properly
processing 5.1 audio from some NBC HD programs Thursday night. Our
maintenance engineers checked our entire audio path this morning and
reset a number of devices in our digital signal path as part of their
troubleshooting efforts. We are no longer hearing an echo on 5.1
programs. Would you let me know if you are still hearing odd audio? We
still have one minor change to make, but cannot until Monday's Today
Show.
Also, please note on Monday our over the air digital channel will be off
the air between 9am and 5pm. WBNS is having tower work done. For the
safety on the climbing crew, all tenants on that tower such as NBC 4 are
required to cease operation.
Thanks for sharing your concern with us. We value your feedback. Our
goal is to have the best quality product possible for your enjoyment and
information. If you hear or see any issues with our digital signal,
would you please contact me?
Have a good weekend.

Man, I'm glad it isn't just me. I've been fiddling with my TV's settings over the past week or so, thinking SRS got turned on or something.
Sometimes it's the pre-echo you guys describe that makes a show unwatchable, but most of the time it sounds like I'm hearing the audio through a pipe. Football games are really annoying with the crowd noises.

Just curious if all stations will be knocked off the air and where they broadcast from.

For the past few days, both WBNS digital and WCMH digital have been off the at the air at the same time for several hours during the day. They both come back up for prime time. Since they both share the same tower I'm guessing that there is some antenna work going on. That's just my guess. Does anyone actually know what is going on? No problem, I'm just curious.

At least as far as the pre-echo last week, other webforums (somethingawful... etc.) had posts from people in florida and arizona who heard the same thing on their HD feeds. They switched to the SD feed had normal audio.
I didn't notice any issue on sunday nights SD/NE live football, or last night's conan.
So if these tower fixes aren't doing any help by the end of this week, I'll be another person calling CMH.
But as for now, wcmh HD OTA sounds ok to me.

The only NBC show I've watched this week was Heroes and it didn't have an audio problem.

Watching WCMH on DirecTV this morning and the audio/video is not synchronized. Video appears to be delayed a few seconds. Checked other local stations and they are correct.

As for last week at least before the echo of other webforums (somethingawful. .. etc) has gone from Florida and Arizona who were encouraged to hear their high-definition post the same thing. They turned to the normal SD feed with audio.
I do not see any problems on Sunday night, SD / Northeast football live, or last night's Conan.
Therefore, if the tower did not make any fixes in this weekend's help, I will be calling another CMH's.
However, as now, wcmh HD field sounds good me.
