Anyone have Time Warner's Digital Phone Service? Any opinions on it? How does the sound quality compare to AT&T's telephone service?

Sound quality seems fine. I hardly ever use it. I only got it to save money on my other services. Just remember that if your isp or your electric goes down you have no phone service. That has not been a problem for me. I have more cell phones than I can use at one time.

My main reason for wanting it is that I hate paying $45 a month to AT&T for phone service I hardly use. I was thinking of getting Time Warners unlimited local service which is around $25 a month. If it drops out I have a cell phone as well so no biggie.

I've had TWC digital phone for about 4 years now. Initially, it would go down fairly often and there'd be short periods several times a week where you couldn't make or receive calls and had no dial tone. But, after they got past the early service issues, it's been quite solid ever since (better than 99% stable). There's no difference in sound quality versus a regular phone line. There are fewer taxes and fees for cable phone versus standard phone. The main advantage standard phone has over cable is 100% stable service and no disruptions in service during power outages.
You indicate that you are paying $45 to AT&T, which I assume is for their unlimited nationwide service. TWC's unilimted nationwide service is usually around $35 when bundled with cable and roadrunner. Your personal bundled price may vary.
AT&T, like TWC, also offers unlimited local service for a lower price. So if you are leary of cable phone, you could still downgrade your AT&T service to save money.
AT&T unlimited local calling is $30+taxes per their website (versus $40+taxes for unlimited nationwide). That price includes several calling features. I think they also offer cheaper options without calling features (ie: caller id, call waiting, etc.)

Try that MagicJack. I've been using mine for about 6 months now with no problems. A few other people I know have tried it. 1 guy had all kinds of problems but the others aren't having any issues. Hell, for $20 a year, you can't beat it.
