View Full Version : TW 8300HDC problem recording new episodes only

I am looking for a setting with the new TW software to allow me to specify the time a show should be recorded in addition to the 'new' or 'all' tags.

Situation: I have the box setup to record the Daily Show - new only.

Result: The box records every Daily Show at any time new or old... the show airs many times in 24 hours so I end up with a bunch of episodes I do not want.

I would be happy if I could get the box to only record the 11pm show... It seems to force the channel (i.e. if I pick The Office on 704 I do only get the HD version...) but not the time..

Any thoughts or suggestions other than manually picking each episode each week?

Thank you-

This is regarded by many people to be a serious shortcoming of the new Navigator software, i.e., not being able to specify a specific series time slot. Also, Navigator cannot limit series recording to unique episodes if the program does not have an episode name.

I don't think anyone's found a workaround. Maybe if enough people complain to TW, they'll get around to fixing it.

Currently, it depends on which version of Navigator you have - which is dependent on which box you have. There are two versions, ODN and MDN, and they are written in different software language due to the differences in the hardware platforms.

If you have an OCAP box, which are the newer models with an Open Cable platform and have model numbers ending in 'C' (ie: 8300HDC), then you have the ODN version of Navigator. I don't believe that the current version of ODN has an option to choose a specific air time. Hopefully, this option will be available in an upcoming software upgrade.

If you have an older box (built prior to 07/01/07), such as an 8300HD, then you have the MDN version of Navigator. The MDN version of Navigator has an option to choose the air time of series recordings. Go into the Series Manager, select a program to edit, and choose Recording Options (I think it's the first menu item, but I'm at work right now). You will want to choose Record "New and Repeat Episodes", and also choose which airtime (ie: 1:00am or all).

Note: Navigator's choices for air times are only All Episodes or the specific time that the program was airing when the series recording was initially set up. In order to choose to record specific air time, first you will need to establish a new Series Recording via the Guide using the air time you want to use going forward. For example, if you want to record the 1:00am airing of The Daily Show, you need to set up your series recording by first selecting a 1:00am episode from the Guide. If you set up the series recording using, for instance, an 11:00pm episode, when you go into the Series Manager and update the program Recording Options, you will only find options to record All airings or only the 11:00PM airings. You would not see an option to choose any other air times.

**** Supposedly, both versions of Navigator are supposed to be smart enough to only record a 'New' episode one time, even when multiple airings per day are each labeled as 'New' in the Guide. But, that function is dependent on the program description, which is often blank for programs like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. These programs air 5 times a day and every airing can say 'New' in the guide. This is supposed to be a function of the conflict resolution feature. So, if for example you have scheduled 3 or more programs that all air at the same time, Navigator would automatically choose to record a different airing of one or more of the programs where additional airings of the same 'new' episode(s) are available.

If, for example, there are two 'New' episodes of Heroes airing on the same nite. As long as each episode had a different description, both episodes should be recorded (if a series recording was set up to record all new episodes). On the other hand, say there are 3 'new' episodes of The Closer airing the same nite and all are labeled 'new'. As long as the description for each episode is the same, Navigator should only record it once.

You might not have noticed that he did indicate that he had an HDC box; thus ODN.

If you want to see where Navigator is supposed to be going, you can read Nebraska's documentation.

http://www.timewarnercable.com/Nebraska/products/cable/mdn/Enhancements.html

If you scroll down to the "Record Series with Options" section, you'll see that "air time" is one of the configurable options.

Nope... totally missed the headline "8300HDC" staring me in the face.

But, hopefully the answers for both types will help readers who have one or the other.

As for Nebraska - those poor folks. It's really sad that they were dumped on with early alpha and beta versions of Navigator starting in fall 2006. The current versions of Navigator that have been installed accross the country in 2008 have all those features that the TWC Nebraska website lists as 'recent improvements'. The fact that the earlier versions were missing all those features that should have always been standard shows how TWC pushed unfinished software on their customers with no care in the world for the end user experience. It's no wonder the city tried to sue TWC.
