Well, now that HDNet isn't showing NHL anymore and I don't see any NHL games listed in HDTV for ESPN either, I guess hockey has taken a pretty big nosedive as far as watching it on TV. I'm not a big hockey fan even though I love going to Blue Jacket's games, but I think the sport worked extremely well in high definition. I understand with the lockout and everything else that happened in the past year that interest in the sport has faded more than usual, but I still think its a shame.

NHL & HDNet ANNOUNCE 2005-06 HDTV SCHEDULE
Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky to make their National TV debuts on HDNet

NEW YORK and DALLAS (Sept. 19, 2005)- The National Hockey League (NHL)
and HDNet have announced the first two months of their live,
high-definition television (HDTV) schedule for the 2005-06 regular
season. The 52-game NHL on HDNet schedule begins Opening Night on
Wednesday, Oct. 5th at 10 p.m. (ET) featuring Wayne Gretzky’s debut
behind the bench as his Phoenix Coyotes take on the Vancouver Canucks.
The first week of the NHL on HDNet also features the intense Central
Division rivalry between the St. Louis Blues and the Detroit Red Wings
(Thursday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m., ET). The NHL on HDNet will then showcase
the much-anticipated national television debut of Pittsburgh's teenage
hockey phenomenon, Sidney Crosby, as the Penguins battle the Boston
Bruins (Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m., ET).

The NHL adopted new rules this season to create more offensive flow,
which will provide more excitement for fans and will further enhance the
television viewing experience. In particular, the newly adopted
shootout will make certain that every game has a winner.

HDNet, a national high-definition telecast partner of the NHL, begins
its fourth year of NHL coverage with a Thursday and Saturday schedule.
HDNet will update its broadcast schedule bi-monthly so that it will be
able feature the hottest players, teams and match ups.

All NHL on HDNet broadcasts will be original HDNet productions. HDNet
NHL game broadcasts are shot exclusively for presentation in the
highest-quality 1080i high-definition format, giving viewers all the
benefits of a 16:9 aspect ratio and high resolution picture without
compromising the image to serve a standard-definition, 4:3 broadcast
audience.

“More and more viewers are discovering that hockey in HDTV is an
incredible television experience,” said Doug Perlman, Senior Vice
President of Television and New Media. “The League's new rules and
compelling storylines promise to make the NHL on HDNet can’t-miss
programming for hockey fans.”

“The NHL is back and we are excited to be part of what is sure to be an
incredibly exciting season," said Mark Cuban, co-founder and president
of HDNet. "No sport benefits as much from HDTV as hockey, and no one
does HD better than HDNet.”

The live broadcast schedule through November 26th, 2005 is listed below
(all times are Eastern). A complete schedule of programming, including
encore presentations and additional games, as scheduled, is available at
www.hd.net or at www.nhl.com.

ESPN dropped thier nhl rights for espn2. so no more hockey from them. OLN picked it up, but they are not hd and will most likely not be for a long time. plus oln is owned by comcast, so i doubt if they did go hd, youd see it on tw or any sat provider

At least HDNet will be showing some games. I thought that I heard a while back that they had dropped their NHL rights as well, but I'm glad to know I was wrong. The more live sports we get in High Definition the better. I've also been pretty disappointed with the HiDef coverage of other sports like golf and auto racing (something other than Nascar).

I actually just realized that as well. I just saw a commercial for it on NBC.

Sucks that we have no Bluejackets, but I will take any hockey in HD at this point!

I don't know why but hockey on TV just never is as good as being at one of the games. Their last season I got to go to a bunch of games thanks to free tickets from friends. I hope I can at least go to one or two this year.

You should refer to them as the CBJ. A BJ is something completely different than a hockey team.

Greeting all! New to the site but I love it thus far. Breaking in a 52" JVC HD-ILA and am looking forward to my first season of NHL in HD (am awed by NFL in HD).

I have TW HD Gold package and an indoor RCA antenna that picks up local as well as can be expected in the Marysville area.

I am confused about OLN's coverage. According to some of the posters on OLN.com, OLN HD will be broadcast on a separate channel.

Anyone clear this up for us?

Thanks-

Welcome to the site!! If you like football in HiDef and like Hockey, then you'll love it in HiDef. I think its the biggest difference as far as enjoying the sport on TV between HD and SD. I won't often watch hockey in SD, but in HD its awesome.

I'm sure it will be broadcast on a seperate channel, probably simulcast the way ESPN and TNT are if I were to guess. I haven't heard of what providers are going to pick up the station though.

Anybody heard anything new on OLN broadcasting in HD?

For Time Warner subscribers, the OLN game was broadcast on InHD (ch. 775). I hope they continue to do so. I also enjoyed the HDNet game. Both games looked brilliant. NHL in HD is spectacular!

Also, FYI for hockey fans, the NHL Center Ice package is free 10/5-12 (ch. 621-630). Every game is broadcast.
