In the Marketing class I'm taking right now, I'm working on developing a marketing plan for a new product. I had to come up with a product enhancement and am currently in the research phase of this project. I need as many people as possible to respond to my survey for this product before Monday.

In the next post I will describe the product I'm envisioning. Then I will make a sample reply with the survey questions. Simply reply by quoting that post and fill in answers to those questions

Thanks in advance for anyone who helps out!! :D

Product Info: Digital Media Recorder (DMR)

Target Price: Main device: $499 ; Add-on tuner cards: $99 (cable cards would be gotten from your cable company)

Summary: TIVO like device with lots of flexibility and power.

Features:

3 slots (in rear of device) for tuner cards to allow choice in source material. This could include cable cards, or similar cards for DirecTV or Satellite radio. Ideally, these cards would process and decode the source with its onboard memory and processor to keep the main device processor available for system duties and quick on screen navigation.
3 more plug and play slots for additional storage via S-ATA hard drives with one being used out of the box for an included 250gb drive.
All settings for device would be stored on local memory so it wouldn't be attached to the storage drives.
2 Built-In OTA High Definition tuners.
Network Connectivity - stream media from PCs, configure device from a networked PC.
LCD on front of device for viewing settings for when a display is unavailableIdeas for Appearance: I would like it to look like the Rotel RSP-1098. I would possibly keep one knob for ease of use in working with the menus on the LCD screen and on the other side place some standard transport controls (play, rewind, etc.)

Yes. I think that the current pricing structure is very competitive for what you get. Three hot-swappable drive bays for more storage--or upgrading your current storage (if I'm reading this correctly, the logic is stored internally allowing for hot-swappable expansion).
Excellent. Again, having paid $1,000 for an HD DVR with half of the capabilities you mention--$499 is very reasonable.
Added power/flexibility. Any thought into MPEG-4 capabilities for the future?
A lot. Networking could be one of the greatest features.
Dude, silver.
Wouldn't even worry about it.

It would take standard PC S-ATA hard drives and they would slide right into the slots and become usable right away. Maybe have an option when recording to choose which drive to store it on. This way you could record all of the OSU games for example on one drive. When the season was over, take the drive out and store it if you want to keep them and pop another one in. Or, you could take it over to a frinds house who has one of these devices and pop it in theirs and watch it there.

Also, I think with the network setup feature you could also upload new firmware and software upgrades right from your computer. Maybe even make parts of it open source so people could make their own themes and modules.

Glad to help.

1. No, Other*
2. Excellent
3. Power/Flexibility
4. A lot
5. Mixed
6. Would not worry about it

* Would prefer a more "no-frills" version, i.e., no display and possibly a more "industrial" form factor, as a beast such as this would reside in my basement.

Sure, sounds fun. Sounds fairly similar to the series 3 HD TiVo that was announced at CES. Even more open source which is always nice. Don't forget a "30 second skip button" on the remote :)
Excellent since I assume that TiVo box is going to be quite pricey.
Added feature sets if your market is consumers but added value if you're looking to market it to the cable companies.
A lot. Expecially if you can store your content on your computer since I have a few terabytes on my machines it would save me from buying more hard drives for the DVR. Though you might not be able to do that with CableCard (licensing issues).
Color is irrelevent to me since this box would be in a closet. If I had to choose I'd go with what ever is the cheapest for you to manufacture. I like metal enclosures since they make good Faraday Cages. Forcing me to choose I'd go with Black.
Would not worry about it at all. Mainly because it's in a closet with all my other gear. Just make sure I can easily control it from a master remote as I prefer to use my custom remote and not the factory default (I don't need more remotes in my life).

Oh yeah, have to have the 30 second skip. Something else neat would be one button for 30 second skip, and then another for a user set time skip. Maybe something like a minute and a half, or 3 minutes since that is the length of most commercial breaks.

That Series 3 TIVO was actually kinda what gave me the idea. It was a combination of that and DirecTV switching their DVR's. I jus thought, wouldn't it be nice to have a unit that could grow with you and accomidate whichever source you wanted to go with at the time.
