Hey,
If you watch WCMH you know that they are in the process of making a new satellite studio at Broad and High. Well their website says it is suppost to be debuting in 2007. But it has not. I have talked to a person at WCMH about this and they said that they will be debuting 2 new HD sets at Broad and High and at the studio on Feb. 1. That has not happened. So now they say that they do not a a firm date. But now I am seeing a commerical with the new set. Does anybody know when they will be debuting it???? Its stupid just to let it sit there!! Heres the link the the video. :hdlove: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISJ5ULtpvRM

I overheard a comment that it would be in a couple of weeks, before the new set at the station will be presented. It really will be a huge improvement, the old set has been through to many wars. But no commitments as strong as that for Broad & High which will be for the A.M. and noon shows. There is really a whole lot of technical engineering involved in just setting a studio set before you consider all the problems that 4 is having with there new HD equipment.

I agree with you. They should do the pratice show like WBNS did before they went HD so they know what to expect and work out all of the problems.

Yes there was too much of a push to get on line with HD content, which I can understand because every day they stayed analogue they were loosing HD viewers. But with all that was involved i.e.: the hardware side was gutted by NBC while they owned the station, the need for plenty of training on the new equipment, not to mention very unfriendly software. The poor engineering staff didn’t have a fair chance to work the bugs out.

I agree.

instead of buying all the equipment at once and put it on the air as soon as they get it without knowing how to use it I would have bought it throughout a year and trained on it behind the scenes. But i guss that it is competition in the market.

You are absolutely on target. There is one problem though,,,,,,,,That is far to logical and practical for many of the people at the top. "AKA Suits". You don't often find the kind of progressive work environment that HD-10 has, where the people that do the work are the people that are primarily involved with how the job at hand is to be executed. There are a lot of very skilled, very talented, people at 4 but they have to work within the confines that the chain of command sets-forth. Although I have to say things are improving now that NBC has sold them.

OK...I am still waiting patiently for NBC to debut there new set. I would think they would use it durning the election day that happened tuesday or durning the bad weather we have had. I would think they would do it because those things are "Big News." I have a feeling that it might debut this week!! Lets hope!

It is about time that they debuted it! I will have to watch tonight at 11 to see it! It was built by the FX Group and they are known for making great HD sets! Lets hope NBC learned something and makes their news product better!

Not sure what I think about the new set yet. My first impression was that the set is kind of so-so--the desk is a little weird looking. A few things I noticed was that the font they used on the set for "Live Titan" doesn't match the font used in the actual TV logo, which is some kind of Humanist font (and better looking, too).
That said, I can't figure out what NBC was doing over there. Before they sold WCMH, it was said that supposedly it was one of their most profitable stations. Yet, they put money into new sets in Providence, Raleigh and Birmingham, but not Columbus. The old set was actually a USED set they bought from a station in Louisville!!! I mean, how cheap can you get?
Not to be too critical, but there are some really awesome sets in other markets. Even WTHR has a better set than WBNS, IMO. Unfortunately, nothing here strikes me as being particularly cool.

I agree with you. I dont like the WCMH set very much. Before they debuted it, there were some things that ere different. The big screen was there....it was a duratran like they have now. And the two duratrans behid the anchors were different. But I do like the standup area and the interview area. I would like to see more of the Weather center. I guss you cant do much with robotic cameras. Also I agree with you on how Columbus doesnt have very good sets. Hopefully WSYX's new set is nice! I really wish WBNS would redew theirs!

The WCMH set has grown on me, but I still don't think it's so great. I guess it's better than the old one. I agree with you about wanting to see more shots of the weather center.
If you go to the Devlin Design Group website, you can see some of their work. They did the WTHR set and won an Emmy for it. I hope WSYX ends up with something just as cool. Check out WTHR and other pictures at this link:

When will WBNS chatch up to WCMH to broadcast their remote reporting in 16:9. WBNS is still broadcasting ther remote reporting in 4:3. Thats not true 16:9 HDTV broadcasting, to me anyways.

I know somebody who works at the station. I recently asked him if WBNS had HD field cameras and if they were going to use HD cameras. This is what they said.
"In my department we have two HD Cameras....Panasonic P2... for the field. The news room is supposed to have a few but the seem to be shooting SD Anamorphic. No it doesn't look too good."
I am gussing from what they said about it not looking too good means that they are most likely not to use HD field cameras soon. Sometimes when I watch the morning news I saw some reports in 16:9, but not HD. They do special pieces in HD. An example would be the Jefferson awards.
