A <st1:city w:st="on"><st1></st1></st1:city>friend who is not a member has been considering a switch from satellite to U-Verse. I thought some of his comments might be useful.

An installer told me that the pole to house line could be most anything from the basic 4 wire phone line I have now (if it is good) or the old coax I had buried 25 years ago (if it is good) or other wires as chosen.

He said they would test the lines when they came for installation but did not say if any was more sensitive to noise, etc. than another. That line comes into a server, a rather large box, maybe like an old VCR, where distribution would be made to all TVs and computers. The server has wifi capability so all such computers could run without further connections. Connections to each TV could be by coax (using existing cable, if there) or by Cat5 or phone line, because it goes to a separate modem sized box at each unit, TV or DVR.

My current DSL would be switched to the server output, which they say will be better than existing speeds (1.5/3.0/&6.0 meg offered) due to the server boxes located nearby which are supplied by fiber cable. They claim 1M uploads.

Everyone mentioned that the 'HD on only one set' problem would be fixed by 1st qtr. 08 and all sets are ready to be programmed for it.

They offer 5 basic channel groupings and 3 net speeds, for 3 TV boxes and one DVR as the basic installations. Extra TVs and HD are all more money. They are still not set up to include the regular phone in the works, but promise that after the installation is in and working.
<o>> </o>>
As usual, the channel groupings don't match anything anyone wants, so you have to pick a higher group just to get a couple wanted stations.
