Can someone outline what 24p offers as it related to Blu-Ray and HD formats? What am I going to gain/see from using 24p?

Also, when and why should I use the 3-2 pulldown? Is it just for Movies or for HD TV broadcasts too?

Thanks!

24p offers the benefits of avoiding the whole 3-2-2-3 pulldown issues which could result in juddering during motion scenes. Data rates are lower which usually helps on cable quality. I've not been able to see a direct difference when I've been in stores testing it out as my TV doesn't do 24p at home.

If the source material was shot on film then 3-2 should be used most of the time. I say most because sometimes people shoot on film then edit on video and you get horrible interlaced video transitions that can't be corrected in 3-2 mode. Most stuff produced for HD on HD cams ends up as 1080i which doesn't need any 3-2 pulldown as it was shot natively at 60 frames per second. Shows like our local CBS news or HD music concerts typically run this fashion.
