Do other "guide-based" DVRs have the same annoying feature? Namely, being stuck to the program guide's idea of the length of a program rather than the actual length of the program.

For example, most football games (NCAA & NFL) are in the guide at 3 hours, but nearly all of them go over 3 hours. Steelers-Ravens on Monday night, WVU-Louisville this evening are two of my latest examples.

I know that one trick is to record the game and SportsCenter (or whatever) after it, but that seems kind of sloppy. Is there any other way to tell the DVR to just record the whole program 'til it ends, or are we at the mercy of the schedulers at DirecTV/ESPN that don't seem to know that football games last more than three hours?

Just curious...

- Go to the show you want to record in the guide
- Press the "Info" button
- Select "Record Once"

You will get a menu where you can adjust the start and stop time.

With the Dish vip 622, you have an extra option setting to start and/or end recordings early/late. For sports, I tell it to end the recording 45 or 60 min late. It's a great feature. Just though I'd add this since you asked about other dvrs.

This would be the same way with the DVR he has as well.

I think he may also be asking about the DVR adjusting this time itself to get the intire show. If, so there is no way for it to do that as it has no idea what it's recording, it only follows the schedule.

Perhaps in the future, the stations can start broadcasting some type of flag that signals the beginning and end of shows. If the DVR watches for this flag, it will know precisely when shows begin and end and can adjust dynamically.
