I have the following issue with my vip622. I believe that I had the same issue with my TWC SA8300.

When I watch a show on a non-HD channel, the volume on my surround sound receiver (connected via toslink) is very loud. So I put the volume control on 20. When I switch to an HD channel, I need to double the volume control to 40 to get the same sound output. Even if the show is not in HD. I don't have this issue if I use the l/r stereo inputs.

Everyone else have this same issue? It's irritating. especially when switching from an HD channel to a non-HD channel and getting blasted out of the room. Is there any way to solve the problem?

How I understand it is, the lower base volume comes from the increased dynamic range from the digital audio signal. If the starting level was the same, the peaks during loud sequences would clip. The analog signal doesn't vary as much, so it's baseline volume can be set higher. The only way to "fix" it would be to install something that compresses that signal, which will in turn degrade it as well.

Anyone else have this problem go away in the last couple of months? It now seems that all channels are at the previously lower HD levels. Or did I fix this myself by accident?
