Wow the 10TV Noon broadcast flipped into HD a few minutes after the start of the show and it was eye popping! The shots were crystal clear and brilliant. The only thing I noticed was when they would cut away from the show to commercials their was a loud static click sound, and it happened almost through entire the show, and a couple graphic glitches but it did really fantastic. When the field cameras it is going to be even more exciting, which reminds me the side bars were not intrusive at all.

They mentioned the clicks on Thursday. They said the new audio controller they are using to try and control the varying levels picks up the audio switches and causes the click sound. They said they will have an update soon for that piece of hardware which is supposed to fix that.

Well... you know what they say about the best laid plans.
10TV News HD debuted a little after 4:00pm today to announce the capture of Billy Ray Fitzmorris.
Oh well... journalistic integrity trumps marketing plans every time. Kind of a rock, paper, scissors kind of thing :)
See you at 5:00!

I misunderstood, I thought that Pat had said that they had taken the hardware offline until they could get the patch. Anyway it was worth the reaction because I had the Yamaha turned up while I was running back and forth to fix the kids lunch; When it happened the first time the toddler freaked and went running and my 80 pound dog tried to get under my zero clearance couch. ;)

Looks great!
I did notice that on Jerry's closeup, there were two gray/white 1/4" bars on either side (aprox. 5:39 p.m.)--anyone else notice this (it could have just been a fluke, as I haven't seen a closeup on Jerry since)?

The five o'clock is even more beautiful than the noon broadcast. The graphics, the sets, and even the location shots really are more impressive than I had anticipaited. Andréa is strikingly beautiful, and Jerry and Chris never have been presented this well. It was nice to see the HD story open into the people behind the scenes by giving Pat some face time. I have seen very few errors in the production. The entire crew at 10 TV should be very proud, because 10 TV News HD has made Central Ohio Very Proud! Thanks for so much!

I had the Tivo Series 3 record the news at noon since one of the 10TV guys said that it was going to be in HD (although not widely known at the time). I noticed in the beginning there seemed to be a mistake because there was no HD picture (just sound and some screen noise) and then they switched to SD and then to HD.
I caught the 5PM news and it did look great!

Would anyone be willing to please post some screenshots for those of us who were unable to watch the maiden broadcast (especially for those WAY out of the viewing area). ;)

News look great, appears that none of the anchors or weather guys will need plastic surgery yet.... Just kidding. Even my "who cares about HDTV" wife said WOW when she watched the show and really like the weather. It even had a 3D look on my old Sony grand Wega. Nice job!!!!

Striking picture and graphics. Enough to make me watch their local newscast exclusively. Typically I would flip between them and wcmh. Nice job, Frank and everyone at WBNS!
I don't want to hijack this thread so I'll be posting some comments about the CBS broadcast of the NCAA title game last night on another thread.

Thank you all for your feedback. I'm going to post a link to this page on our intranet so that the very talented team at WBNS-10TV can see your kind words.
As you guys heard me say at the reception, it's not the Senior Managers that deserve the accolades. Directors, Artists, Producers, Studio Crew, all took ownership and busted their butts to make this launch go as flawlessly as possible. We're VERY proud of them.

Frank did you catch the note from Scott and me about the bars on Jerry's close ups?

Here's a frame from yesterday's noon broadcast. It's somewhat soft because it's converted from a 200 dpi bitmap and scaled down to 960x540. And yes, that monitor was displaying that weird fuschia-like cast.

One of the drawbacks of HD -- it shows every flaw -- did anyone else catch the scratch on the front edge of the desk, about 1/4 of its length from the left side?

PS: Most everything else is pretty stunning, though....

Yes that scratch even showed up in analog. I was told that some of that was intentional to make HD day even more appreciated.

I did see the note.
I'm not sure I know what he's talking about but it could be the new additions to the set. We had to add in some elements to fill out the 16 x 9.
Also, the screen grab is from the temporary set, not the new one.

Frank I just finished watching the Noon news today on HD DVR and there is one more thing that you might want to add to the lint brush, scissors, and sticky tape, since allergy season is here, eye-drops. Chucks eyes were really red,:hdlove: so red I couldn't quit focusing on his eyes. You guys are doing such a beautiful job even subtle things like that are really obvious.:hdlove:
Again wonderful job!

Message to WBNS - whoa!
Just watched 25 minutes of the news, and it really is stunning. All of the graphics, animations and layouts are excellent. The text is easily read and the implementation of SD feeds with the pillarbox is handled well. Overall the layout is a good use of the 16:9 aspect. The two layouts that stood out the most are: 1) 2 video windows with one for main anchor and one for reporter 2) offset anchor + story graphic/heading window. The animations flow smoothly, and are eye-catching and pleasing, yet not distracting.
Keep up the good work!

OK, now you're getting tricky. Time and temp showing up on the side of the 10 (and outside the 4x3 display) on the HD broadcast, but underneath the 10 (and in the 4x3 display) in the SD broadcast is just showing off. :-)
Also glad to see you adjusted the close-up shots of just Andrea or Jerry so they aren't centered w/ the gray trim from the background on each side of them. The original angle made it look too much like a pillared SD shot. The shifted shot w/ graphics on the left or showing beyond the trim worked much better.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It is definitely still a work in progress but we're very pleased.
It's a new world for us. We have to not only re-think the news production but programming as well. In years past we could air the Masters on Thursday and Friday in HD but realized this morning that we can't any longer due to the news in HD (never preempt the news.)
Just when you think you've thought of everything...
Thanks again folks!

When you guys make the sports highlight reel are you able to include HD spots? That was the first thing that popped into my mind after on the first 11pm news since the game right before was in HD which you showed clips from.
Another question about your field cameras. Do they have an option for 16x9 in SD? That way you could fill the screen even if it's not in HD. I guess it might have the downside of making the 4:3 conversion even more soft.

I'm not sure I understand your question about the sports highlight reel and the HD spot. Can you elaborate?
Our cameras will not do 16 x 9. While many companies took an interim step in cameras between Beta and HD (most went with DVC Pro) we held out to wait until we purchased our HD field cameras.
Those should be here this year.

Frank, I think Zelig is asking if it is possible to run the sports highlights in HD if the original source is in HD--similar to how ESPN HD/Sportscenter does it. If the game was broadcast in HD, they show the HD clip. My guess is that you guys receive or record the clips in SD.

I need to repeat my complaint that the sound on the 11PM news does not match that of the shows straddling it. After watching CBS primetime shows, I have the turn the sound up to listen to the news, then turn it back down again when Letterman comes on.

Sorry for the late reply.
We are not currently broadcasting 10TV News HD in 5.1. However we plan to soon. We just have bigger priorities first to make our broadcasts more visually striking.
More to come!

One thing I meant to post before I took off out of town last week is that I am finding the animated side bars for the SD portions of the broadcast are a little distracting. While trying to focus on the center video, my peripheral vision keeps catching the animation and pulling my eyes away from it. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just crazy?

Gotta throw my 2 cents in about something. On some of the advertisements for the upcoming news, there is a beep or chirp close to the end of the ad. First time I heard it, ( a few weeks ago) I about jumped outta my chair. Since then, many of these ads have had the same beep or chirp. Don't know about others, but it is getting annoying to me. Is this put in intentionally, or just a production glitch or what. It seems to be louder than the normal audio and can scare the heck out of you if you are not expecting it.
Has anyone else noticed this, and is it annoying to others?
Frank...is this intentional?

Kevin,
Sorry for replying so late. Between the CBS Meetings, Muirfield and a little personal time with the family, been a bit behind.
There is no beep going on purposely. I watch our news in HD each night and haven't noticed it before.
Is it still happening?
KevinGC
06-18-2007, 01:28 PM
It isn't actually during the news itself. It was towards the end of 30 second or so spots announcing what was upcoming on the news later. Haven't heard it lately...but haven't had the TV on for 2 weeks either.

Frank & Kevin...
I think what you are hearing is supposed to be a "mouse click" near the end of some promos or teases. I remember thinking it odd, out of context, and rather loud at the times I have noticed it!

I think I know the noise you are talking about. To me it is a static click when they go to commercial, and when they come back from commercial. It is almost like a noisy switch. At the preview party that problem existed in a more prominent way, it was mentioned by one of the guests, and I believe it was Pat that said they were working it. I actually was wondering reciently when that problem might be fixed, but I know the engineers at 10 are working like crazy still making changes.

Have seen some more ads for the news the past few days with the "beep" a few seconds from the end of the ad. Has anyone else heard it, and is it annoying to others too?
