Here is a thread for comments and pictures from tonight's event.
It was a good time. I thought it was interesting and informative the whole time we were there. I thought there was a really good turnout as well. I wish I could have spoken directly with more of the members here, but there was a lot going on. We'll have to all get togethor again definitely.
One comment from the photographer in me. It was a tougher shooting environment than I expected in there. The high contrast from their lights and the relatively low overall light level made it tougher than I would have thought going into it. Onto the pics.... :D

It was nice to see everyone at 10TV tonight. That was pretty cool. Maybe we can discuss some of the things we learned in this thread since I noticed people were sort of splintered into individual groups talking to the various 10TV employees.
One of the interesting things that I think it was Jamie had told me is that Time Warner compresses the heck out of the signal and that there is a big difference between the OTA (over the air) broadcast and what comes through Time Warner. I might have to hook up my antenna again (after TW started carring the ABC and FOX HD channels I no longer needed it) to my TIVO Series 3 HD DVR and compare it to what comes through Time Warner.
Here are my pictures...

I used a little Sony DSC-N1 camera. I wish I would have brought my Nikon D80.

I really want to thank the staff at WBNS for inviting HD Columbus out for this event--my wife and I had a great time. I didn't get a chance to meet a 3rd of the members that came out; but, I can say that you all are class acts and look forward to meeting you in the future.
More thoughts and pictures to come...

I would like to say that I had a great time. I can now input into my mind how a news cast works and the set up that goes with it. It also shows that when WBNS says that they care about the people of Columbus, they mean it and back it up with action, not just words. Thanks Frank and your whole team!

I didn't forget them, I just didn't take them with me on the tour. The last people didn't leave until just before 10.

That's interesting. I will make some recordings of 10.1 OTA and QAM on the MyHD card tonight during prime time and analyze the bitrates.

I had so much fun last night. It was very interesting to see all that went into converting to a HD newscast. I can't wait to watch the newscast on Monday. I've been telling all my coworkers how awesome last night was. I bet they watch too. :)

Many thanks to all the 10TV staff for letting us come in and for being such good hosts. It was a lot of fun and very interesting to see the beind the scenes aspect of the 10TV studios.
I wonder if they'd hire someone with ZERO studio experience?:D
Thanks again!!!

One other thing I wanted to comment on was the general HDColumbus group. I've been in "get togethors" before from web communities and it's not always a smooth process. I thought everyone there represented themselves and this community in a positive light. Hopefully, this will allow to do more of these types of events.

I think I did that test with my Series 3 TiVo and I remember the recording sizes coming out nearly the same.
QAM256 carries twice the bitrate of 8-VSB, so TW can carry 2 HD broadcast streams on a cable channel.

Here's what I shot last night. I had a great time. I definately will be watching the first broadcast next week. We should try for another outing as a group, once every 5 years might not be enough...

What a terrific night! It was really nice to meet so many really fantastic members. And the people from 10TV couldn't have been more hospitable. So much information and good times to be had. The pics that those who thought to bring cameras were a much appreciated treat. The folks at 10TV once again are setting the "Gold Standard" for central Ohio broadcasting! The viewers of central Ohio have much to be grateful for, because bar has been set so very high for the kind of HD quality broadcasting. Thanks again.

WELL! I can’t tell you how incredibly thrilled we were with the turnout, participation, and feedback from our friends at HDColumbus!
When we first started talking about how we could get the word out about the new 10TV News HD, we knew an open house with HDColumbus would be a hit. Thanks to Scott, Jaret, and everyone else, it ABSOLUTELY WAS!!!!
I told someone last night that you guys have seen more then even the President of our company! Fortunately we work for a company that believes in hiring good people and then getting out of their way and allow them to do their jobs.
The HD Columbus members were the first non-WBNS employees to see the set, graphics, cameras and, of course, the final product.
On behalf of Tom Griesdorn, our President & General Manager, Marvin Born, our VP of Engineering, Ken Eyerman, our Chief Engineer, and John Cardenas, our News Director, thank you again for your support and participation.
We’ll check in Monday evening to see what everyone thought.
Also, as I mentioned last night, there were a lot of “suits” in the room but there is an extremely talented and passionate group of people that are the real reason we’ve been successful. They deserve the recognition so please indulge me.
Jamie O’Connor- Sr. Director
Lee Rosenthal- Executive Producer
Chris Brown-Art Director
Pat Ingram- Engineering Supervisor
Denny Adams- Studio Supervisor/Lighting Director
Gil Rinehart- Studio Operations/Lighting
Doug Jones- Promotion Manager
David Plantz- Promotion Producer (Super Bowl HD Spots/Composer of Carousels (Dreaming of Tomorrow))
Nicole Williams- Promotion Producer (HD Marketing Campaign/HD Insert in Dispatch)
Glenn Doell- Set Designer (Curtis Elliott Designs)
David Ryan- Set Designer (Curtis Elliott Designs)
Elizabeth Wolfe-Engineering/Weather Center
Eric Hartzell-Engineering/Studio Control
There are MANY more that certainly deserve recognition and the management at WBNS-10TV couldn’t be more proud of this team.
Plus… TV People love to eat so… THANKS TO ANGELA COOK, DOUG JONES, AND DAVID PLANTZ FOR COORDINATING THE PIZZA!
We have a lot of work still to do so I’ll let you go for now. Wish us luck and thanks again!

Tonight's Jeopardy was 3.62GB on cable and 3.63GB OTA, I don't think Time Warner is modifying the digital stream it's getting from WBNS.

I started a new thread about the bandwidth because I don't want to ruin this great picture thread any more than we have already.

I really wish I could have been there, but my job had me on the road. It will be the same problem for me during the HD launch Monday, but I'll be sure to tune in as soon as I get back.
Thank you Frank and the rest of the 10tv crew for the preview, and thanks to those HDColumbus members were able to make it there, especially those that have posted pictures!

First chance I've had to gat back on-line since the event but a big THANKS to Frank and the crew at WBNS 10HD for the hospitality.
When Frank stated that WBNS had the best producers he wasn't kidding. I'm in my hotel room in cincinnati right now and have seen errors on all 3 local Cincinnati channels I've watched this morning!
Met Chuck Strickler at the Crew viewing party a few years back. He's a really cool guy! I have a great story but don't want to embarass him.
Can't upload pics until I get back home to Gahanna Sunday eve but it was a fabulous time.
Hopefully I can do a write-up on my website. When it's dobe I'll link it.
