View Full Version : RPTV convergence suggestions?

Hello,

I have a Mitsubishi 55819 RPTV with a user-accessible convergence tool. Basically, it displays a grid of white lines (resulting in about 64 boxes) that you navigate through with the remote. You select a line, select RED or BLUE, then use the arrow keys to move the red/blue line left, right, up, or down. The idea is to set the convergence in each region of the screen. GREEN is evidently fixed, and can't be adjusted. In some cases, mostly near the edge of the display, it's impossible to get the line to "go white".

The problem is most noticeable when viewing something white -- a hockey game, white backgrounds, etc. The left third of the display has a definite pink-ish tinge to it. I can also see a non-converged line when viewing a 4:3 program, at the edge of the gray bars to either side.

This particular Mitsubishi model is known for having a "red push", according to the reviews I've seen. One reviewer even got some kind of inline attenuating device to drop the red signal by a couple of db or so. I've tried adjusting the tint more towards green, and that helps a little, but not very much.

Am I dealing with a mechanical problem here, or, as suggested by scgalena in another thread, a magnetic problem?

Any ideas, suggestions, etc. would be welcome.

Thanks,

RLW

What type of display engine does this have? The difference in colors on halves of the screen is occasionally seen with LCD-based displays and would require a professional calibration to mitigate the problem, though it would not be removed altogether if the difference is clearly visible.

The other problem (the convergence) issue should be correctable with the user-level menus. Depending on the projection technology the convergence may drift over time, and should be checked and adjusted periodically.

I know my front projection unit requires me to line up the tubes pretty close physically before using the electronic convergence controls. Assuming your set has the same abilities, maybe the tubes have physically moved and are aimed too far off to align electronically. I'm guessing it getting bump hard enough during something like moving may cause this.

It's a rear projection CRT-style display. Great big Mitsubishi 55" cabinet.

Since it's a CRT system it sounds like a physical problem. Start with a user-level convergence and then a service-menu level convergence and see if that solves the problems. If they persist then you will need to have the unit professionally aligned.
