optical cable question

I am just using optical cable for the first time. I bought a cable and I notice that the ends have what looks like a protective cover over the end of the fibre. Is that right? Is that common? It looks like I might be able to pull it off.

Yes it is a protective cover. Pull it off then pug it in.

And don't feel bad for asking, a few weeks ago a good friend of mine did the same thing, we had a long conversation about why the audio from his new tuner wasn't working and finally I asked him if he took the covers off the ends, he thought they were suppose to be that way, how he jammed them into the connection I will never know though. :D
