Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an advanced optical disc technology still in the research stage which would greatly increase storage over Blu-ray and HD DVD optical disc systems.

I always wondered if this technology (FMD) would ever catch on...

I have a good friend who works at in-Phase developing some of the current holographic storage stuff. Not quite ready for prime time.

Lets see, DVD came out (in the US) back in 1997. Now we're getting HD-DVD & BluRay in 2006. Not that I'm claiming DVD to be dead but that's only about 10 years seperating the formats. I'd say HVD might be ready for the world in 10 more years. The key aspect here is in the materials research. You have to find a material that can hold the holographic information with no loss even going through temperature cycles and different enviroments.
