View Full Version : Cheap OTA HD Options

I'm sick and tired of waiting for TWC and Sinclair to resolve their differences. I'm stuck between deciding to switch to WOW or buy a OTA HD receiver. WOW does not have SHO-HD or InHD 1 & 2. Losing both of those channels would bother me as I watch them quite a bit. Buying a OTA HD receiver sucks b/c of the costs involved and it will essentially become worthless once TWC and Sinclair resolve their dispute (inevitably this will occur days / weeks once I do something).
Any suggestions? I'm especially looking for cheap ways to get OTA HD. Anyone know about using an old activated VOOM box for OTA HD? They can be had relatively cheaply off eBay.

I was a voom subscriber and ended up with 3 boxes. They work great as an OTA tuner. Be careful on ebay and make sure that it was activated already. There are lots of boxes out there that were never turned on, and will not work. Don't buy from a warehouse that says it is new and in the box.

Robbiee19 sold me his used Samsung SIR-T351 so I'm all set. Didn't have much luck though with the indoor antenna in my basement. I could only get CBS. Going to play around with it more this weekend.

buckeye3d,
You may have to run a long RG6 cable to move the antenna around the whole basement. I did that at my old house and got good results or try to run the cable up thru the walls to the next level up stairs.

Yeah that's my plan Rob. Hopefully I'll have time this weekend to play around with it.

Alex,
Was wondering how did it go this weekend? Any luck on getting all the channels?

Ended up being pretty busy this weekend. I did get a chance to aim the antenna a few different ways (still on the short cable provided with the antenna). I'm now able to get everything but ABC and UPN. I'm sure once I get a long cable run and find the right spot I'll get everything. I watched the game on Fox last night in HD. Looked great! My only issue with the box so far is I get a thin solid white line on the left edge of the projected image.
