DirecTV to Have 1000 HD Channels By 2007

This was the topic of an article dated September 2004. I think that they have a long way to go before this happens. Of the 1000 HD channels - 150 would be national and the rest would be all the locals that they offer. I also read recently (Nov 06) that they plan on having 40 HD channels by mid-07, far cry from 150.

Can the current Sats, dishes and receivers handle the bandwidth (or compression) necessary for that many HD signals?

no

you will need at minimum a new dish

if they go mpeg 4 (most likely) you will need a new reciver
