I am currently looking for a new DVD player, any suggestions?

I was wondering if it is worth it, or should I wait and see if and when the HD-DVD will take off.

It's hard to say how soon HD-DVD will be completely supported. We do know that some major Hollywood studios have signed on to release some movies in the format, but until the price point comes down a bit, it's hard to say. Plus, Blu-ray seems to have some major backing as well. I think it would be a safe bet to get a nice DVD player for the time being.

If you have an extra DVI input on your set, I would recommend the Samsung DVD-HD941 which upconverts to 720p or 1080i. It has some quirks, like an annoying/undocumented initial setup procedure, and the if it loses power for an extended period of time, you have to go through the same quirkiness all over again. Overall, I have been very satisfied with the PQ it produces, the extensive media formats it will support (all writable, dvd-audio, jpeg discs, etc.), and it seems to power though the most scratched up DVD's with ease. In addtion, it seems as though it's region free. Good luck in your search!

If you can wait 6 months then you could get a PS3 with a BluRay drive. Otherwise look for one that upconverts to 720p/1080i and has a HDMI output.

I thought of the PS3 as well, but will it only be compatable with Blu-Ray discs, or will it support all?

My Mits in my basement is 6 years old and only has Component hook-ups. My Toshiba DLP has HDMI, but I am using that for Directv HD Tivo.

I guess that I am in no hurry, so I will just do more research.

Thanks for both your input.

I just purchased a cheap Toshiba DVD with HDMI that upconverts. I plan on waiting to see what happens in the HD DVD/Blu-Ray world as well as for the PS3.

Q: Does anyone have experience with using an HDMI switcher?

Here is my issue, my TV only has 1 HDMI input, which I am using for my Directv HD DVR. I noticed that they make switchers that I could plug both my DVR and DVD into with 1 HDMI going out to the TV. Is it worth it?

Thanks!
