Anyone get a PS3 or Wii? I think I'll end up with both eventually, but have no desire for a PS3 until it gets some games that excite me a little more. I'm loving my 360 so much right now with Gears of War, Call of Duty 3, Splinter Cell, etc. that the PS3 doesn't offer me anything. The Wii, on the other hand looks like a lot of fun, so I'll be keeping my eyes open for one in the near future.

huh..you're thr first I've heard that didn't like it. You weren't expecting a 360/PS3 type system were you that focused on graphics?

A friend and I went to Meijers on Wednesday night to try and wait for a PS3. Unfortunately they had a raffel to determine who was allowed to wait in line for 24 hours. We didn't win. There were about 40 people and only 6 (4/2) systems. We only were planning on reselling it on eBay so we weren't at too much of a loss. I'm quite happy with the 360. I've been playing Gears of War quite a lot and just bought Viva Pinata. Unless you need to play every game out there I don't see any reason to buy a 360 & a PS3. I had an XBox & PS2 during the last generation which was fun but now that GTA isn't exclusive on the PlayStation anymore I don't have much of a need to get one. The only reason I would think about getting a PS3 would be for the Blu-Ray player and if that and the standard def DVD image quality was good. Of course, I only have a 1080i RPTV CRT set so I don't really want to pay big money just to get a 480p image if they can't scale it properly.

I picked up a Wii yesterday morning at Wal-Mart. Only waited for 15 minutes and got #18 out of 20. It's a lot of fun if you have kids or enjoy playing a different type of game; one with focus on gameplay over graphics (not saying some 360 games don't have good gamepaly though).
I have a 360 and really enjoy it; it is better for single player games and games over XBox Live. The Wii is more fun when you have multiple people at the same location and/or just want to have fun and not be serious. Plus, "the wife" likes it more and cuts me a little slack with respect to it :)
I do have a problem getting it to display in Widescreen, even though it is supposed to be supported. I believe I will get that problem worked out eventually...

I stopped by a friend's for lunch today to check out the Wii. He got one on Sunday morning at Target. We tried bowling and boxing in Wii Sports and very briefly checked out Madden. It was a lot of fun, I like bowling the best so far. I don't think it will replace my 360, but it really isn't meant to. It's a totally different experience. I'm looking forward to picking one up and playing some Zelda.
I think the biggest thing against the PS3 right now is its more of the same. It worked twice for Sony, but now with a console that costs twice as much and the 360 and Wii really expanding on the whole console idea, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony come in last. It's only hope is that there are enough die-hard Sony guys to back it.

Best Buy for my Wii yesterday. I was 17 out of 24. I have that and a 360 now so I don't think I will be getting a PS3 any time soon, not that I could find one if I wanted too anyway.
I am a bit miffed at the lack of component cables, the 480i on my set is just killing me with this thing, I hope the component cables help when they come out.
I too had the widescreen issue, I put it on wide but on my sets "natural" setting it is still pillar boxed. It does something though, I set it on TV full/Wii Wide and it does look right.
I am amazed out how well the controllers/sensor work, it is actually pretty intuitive. And the sensor is tiny and very easy to setup. So points for that. Pretty happy so, except for Rampage (30 dollar launch title, why not?), it is kinda difficult to control. Monkey Ball, Zelda, and Raving Rabbids are a hell of alot of fun though.

So when you changed the Wii to 16:9, did it look like it showed you more "information" on the screen? I think mine just made the info look squished (although maybe I just stared at it so long I lost my mind).

unlike you lucky dogs, i'm only going to be able to afford one of systems, and that will be the ps3, whenever i can get one at best buy. if i happen to be the first person on the forum with a ps3, i'll write a short review.

you could buy both a Wii and a 360 for the price of a PS3 and have 10x more fun, IMO.

I went to Wal-Mart at Tuttle Crossing yesterday on my lunch break to get some things and decided to walk by the game section and saw two 60gig PS3 sitting there. I got excited and called the fiancee to tell her my intentions. I walked around the next isle over and came right back and one was already gone so I found the nearest employee and bought the last one. I was planning on selling it on ebay but after looking on there they don't seem to be going for that much so I'm thinking about just keeping it. I wasn't planning on getting one so soon but would have got one eventually. I thought about getting a 360 with the 100 mir at microcenter but I like the ps3 controllers better and the fact that the blueray is built right in instead of having to buy another box (360hd) to sit with all my other hardware. Plus I'm sure the graphics and games available will meet or surpass the 360 with due time.

I got a ps3 last week. I couldn't find any component cables, so am waiting on them to arrive in mail via ebay purchase. I've played resistance, and even with just 480i, the game is awesome. The 5.1 sound is great, and online is super easy (and unlink the microshaft xbox360, ps3 online is FREE!). I've borrowed a friend's ridge racer, will post more info once I get the component cables (no, i don't have an hdmi input on my tv).

rumors of Toys-R-Us having more stock before Christmas have popped up. I'm not sure the validity though. Seems worth it though to swing by each morning to see if they have any in stock.

I keep hearing this, and although technically true, this is an apples to oranges comparison. The Xbox online system is so much more than Sony's. If you've owned a 360 for any length of time, you'd probably agree. For the PS3, the online experience is "per game" not system wide and the servers are supplied by the game makers, not Sony. You don't have the downloads and the friends system that works so well on the 360. That's just the start, but realize that although you have to pay for 360 online, you get 1000x more content and usability. You get what you pay for.
BTW. I also saw 2 PS3's sitting on the shelf at Meijer. I was in the store for @ an hour and both were there the whole time. That's not good for a week before Christmas. If I saw a Wii, I would have snagged it immediately, but didn't pay much attention to the PS3. I've said it for the last year, I think Sony's arrogance is going to net them 3rd place in this console war. The only thing that will keep them afloat are people who only buy the PS3 just because they think its the best because of Sony's history.
The PS3 launch line-up is a joke. Resistance may be good, but that's it for your shiny new $600 system. Considering you can get games with just as good, of not better, gameplay and graphics on the 360, it really doesn't seem worth it right now. Don't get me wrong, I own every console in the last 10-15 years and will probably get a PS3 eventually. But, right now Nintendo and Microsoft are blowing Sony out of the water in every category.

I also was at a Meijers recently and saw a 60GB PS3 sitting there just asking to be bought. The eBay inflation is over so there's no reason to buy one now.

Here's a decent article on msnbc.com:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16273891/
They say it's the games and not the console's that make the diff. I tend to agree. At least for now, it would appear that the 360 has the advantage in this arena. But the PS3 will get better as time goes on and game makers can tweak the games more. I personally have a 360 and don't intend on getting a PS3. I don't see any advantages it has over the 360. Core hardware differences (where it counts, gpu, cpu, mem, etc) are minimal. Game content will be where one will win over the other.

I don't see the point in buying a PS3 right now (especially if you already have a 360). I would wait a year at least until Sony has a better selection of games and have improved their online service, worked out the bugs in the console (and the price has hopefully dropped).
I got a XBOX 360 a year ago. In that time the 360 has had 2 major software updates that have added a lot of nice new features and it now has a good selection of games to choose from.

Well that is because in this case, you get what you pay for. PS3's online service doesn't even come close to XBOX Live so it should be free.
Microsoft has had a good part of last generation and a full year in this generation to work on their online service and it shows. Sony has a lot of work ahead of them.

They had 7 PS3 returns? Did they say what reason people were giving for returning them? Price seems like an odd reason. I mean they had to buy them initially and it's not like they have gone down in price.

I think the situation with eBay has something to do with it. I think many people may have bought one thinking they were going to double-to-triple their investment on eBay--which has proved to not be the case. I saw a guy driving down the street today with a poster board strapped to his car stating "PS3 FOR SALE!!" "CALL XXX-XXX..."

I gotta say, that cracks me up a bit. Of course when they first came out and I saw what they were going for on eBay, I was wishing I had one to sale. Not so much anymore, though.
Ok, talking about this makes me want to go play Gears of War. So I think I will. :D

I've had my PS3 for about two weeks now and it's a really nice piece of hardware. Sony has the typical launch problem in that there are no really good games out at launch (Resistance is pretty good but it's not quite Gears of War) and the price is a large pill to swallow. Things should get better with Motor Storm (which looks great in the demo that you can get for free) and Heavenly Blade hit next year.

i think the people were returning them because they couldn't make money on ebay anymore. looks like the shortages are over. hopefully the same will be said about the wii soon.
i got my component cable, and can now see the games in 1080i. and they are extremely nice, imo. i have resistance and ridge racer. 4 of us from work have been playing resistance every night that we can, and having a blast (literally). the 5.1 audio is amazing - you'll blow something up in a tunnel, and after the explosion, you'll hear falling debris all around you. ridge racer is still kind of a retarded racing game, but my kids, wife, stepdaugher, myself, spent 2 hours tonight playing ridge racer with the motion sensor used for steering, and we had a great time - laughing and yelling and joking around. i image the wii would be really fun with it's motion sensor also, since my 7 year old loved it (it's much easier for kids than trying to use buttons and thumbsticks). so far, i'm really happy with my ps3, and am really looking forward to burnout 5, ut 2007, and gta 4 next year. the wii is probably more fun, but it won't have some of the games i want (like ut, gta, etc.).
Well, I finally jumped into the next gen console. I ended up going with the 360 from microcenter simply because of the $100 MIR. I bought gears of War for myself, and Cars for my little one. I gotta say that I am impressed with XBOX live. The only thing that miffed me a bit was the fact that I couldn't reactivate my old account.
The other reasons I didn't go with the PS3 is the fact that it's so new, so expensive, so few games, no HD cable with it... Just a bunch of silly stuff you should get for $599 that you don't.

Try the Burger King games DVD on your 360. It was the hot one at our house last night, even beating out Gears of War! Only problem is, it could make you very hungry for a Burger King sandwich and fries.

I picked up a Wii yesterday. I wasn't really expecting to but walked into Best Buy just as they were carting out 5 that just came in, so I picked one up. i broke down and bought a 56" jvc hd-ila tv yesterday (my old projection was fuzzy when it came to trying to read text on the ps3). this tv is a huge improvement, and now that i've seen ridge racer 7 in 1080p, i have to say that you xbox360 owners are missing out (although i stand by my earlier statement that rr7 is terrible to play). talledega nights and superman returns on bluray were both unimpressive. cars on dvd was very impressive though, looking much better than either of the bluray movies, which makes me wonder if the problem is that there are no bluray movies mastered really well, or if there's an issue with bluray movies, or if i just happened to watch two poorly made bluray movies. with about 20 more bluray movies in my netflix queue, i guess i'll find out over the next couple months.

Maybe we're missing-out on HDMI...I was a little confused by that statement as well. My 360 HD-DVD looks pretty dang good through component, I can say that.
HD-ILA's are nice TV's.....great purchase! I just sold my HD-61Z585 Gen. 1 D-ILA to my aunt last week. I had owned it since Feb. of 2005, and it was an amazing machine...congrats!
Actually..I need to update my sig...I've unloaded all my gear and got all new stuff in the past 14 days. 42HDT79 Hitachi plasma, a 360 HD-DVD player, and an SD-4980 upconverting Toshiba DVD player. I'll probobly be getting the Bose Cinemate in the next month or two as well....I'm tired of dealing with huge TV's and huge black boxes w/ tons of wires...I'm now at the stage of my life where I want simple elegance I guess, I don't know.
I'd also like a Wii if anyone knows where I can find one:)

Watching Discovery HD via component and HDMI you can visibly see a difference on my tv. I freeze framed a closeup of a cheetah on one of the shows and switched back and forth between the two to see if I could see the difference and it was very noticable. HDMI was much more detailed and clear. On my TV at least, it makes a big difference.

That's likely because you're TV is digital and you were switching between an analog and digital signal. If you would have used a different digital signal, like DVI, it would have been the same. This is more a matter of the TVs analog/digital converters than the quality of the signal. The difference will vary from TV to TV depending on the type and quality.

Back to consoles for a moment.
My girlfriend got up at 3am and grabbed me a Wii for Christmas. Yeah shes a keeper.
I just bought a different input cable for it. The standard cable is an old composite video for 480I. Although its no PS3, I have heard that the 480P cable makes a noticable difference on many games. It should arrive soon and I'll report back what I see on my Panasonic plasma. Has anyone else tested the component in vs composite?

Oh I'm sure that was the case. Since my TV is a digital TV, it will make a big difference going from an analog source to a digital one. But I was only responding to the "hdmi is overblown" comment. For me it's not. It's very much worth it.

Its been about 1 month with the Wii composite cable for me, and I have seen it now on a few different games. The differences are immediately noticable, but not earth shatttering.
Going from 480i to 480p on the Wii for games currently out appears to add much brighter color, and less jagged outlines. The contrast is much stronger as well. Because it is the same resolution, only non-interlaced, the level of detail remained unchanged.
While not the same as going from component to composite on a true HD device, the change is a very nice one for modern monitors and TVs.

That's not bad. Is the controller a Sony, or third party? Do you get to pick the movies or are they prepicked? I've been tempted a little lately, but they still don't have any games I want to play really. Most of the decent games are also available on the 360, so I just get it on there.

sony controller, same one that comes ackaged with it. you get to pick from certain movies from sony. they have the information on their site, i think under special offers... you just print on the pdf, send copy of receipt and part of the box and they will ship you 5 in the mail. Better than nothing. so if movies are 30 each and the controler is 50, basically you get 200 worth of free stuff with this offer. While i think the console is still a little high, i went for it...

Sony has a pretty killer list of stuff coming up over the next couple of months at least from what they showed at E3. Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Lair, and LittleBigPlanet are all going to be pretty kick ass. They had some good downloadable stuff outside of LittleBigPlanet like the Pixel Junk Racers game and Everyday Shooter (which for me was one of the biggest surprises of the show)
