At the 10:14 sec time in the 2nd quarter of the OSU Michigan game the picture started shimmying. The picture then went to SD with the side bars for about 4 minutes. After the commercials the game resumed in HD. I receive the ABC 6.1 signal through my DISH 921 OTA. Was this an ABC network problem, a channel 6 problem, or was my receiver at fault?

Since the audio was doing just fine during the glitch I'd have to say it was something from the source at the event. They switched to SD for a while until they fixed it. (Probably had to reboot windows)

I am using an amplified antennea direct into my set and got the same thing, so it was all on the other side.

Sorry guys I didn't see that problem. Had HD all game long.

I was getting it OTA and saw it too. Unfortunately it's not uncommon. I've often seen HD shows go SD for a few minutes. Figured it was just technical difficulties. Beats a test pattern.

same problem here with OTA. At least it wasn't on NBC, those audio pops are starting to drive me crazy.

No audio problems here, only the 4 min SD thing.

No audio problem here. The 4 min. SD thing started when ESPN tried to show a replay. Apparently the replay box was running linux and they had to re-boot the damn thing. Common problem.

Just piling on... I also experienced the revert to SD for 4 minutes as a result of the reply problem. I did not notice any frequent audio drops throughout the broadcast. Althought I'm not a Brett Musberger fan so to be honest I wasn't paying attention to what the announcers were saying most of the time. :p

Outage could have been caused by the blimp. It's very rare but on a few occasions over the years the blimp has been known to disrupt the feed by slowly moving through the exact center of the uplink truck's microwave path to the satellite.

It's old news now but zelig2 you were almost right-on about the cause of the 4 minute HD outage two weeks ago.

I was told yesterday at the Schott by a Units technical person that the main Tandburg HD encoder between the truck and stadium fiber transmission room locked-up. That lock-up forced ESPN to switch to the SDI uplink truck back-up while the encoder was being rebooted (and maybe kicked a couple of times?)

His thinking is maybe the encoders were being pushed a little too hard with a higher than normal bit rate setting to gain some extra picture quality?

Just thought I would pass his information on.
