well, as we discussed in another thread (that i can't find), the ps3 is now officially cut to 400,000 units in north america and 100,000 in japan and none in europe for the launch in november. this really muddies the waters for which game console to buy and for the hd-dvd/blu-ray thing.

Well people have been saying Wii60 (http://www.wii60.com/) for a while now. Other than Metal Gear Solid there's not much reason to buy a PS3 as a gaming console. A cheaper BluRay drive is a possibility. The more I use the 360 the more I think the PS3 won't do well in America. MS did well with Xbox Live on the first gen and have taken it to the next level for this gen. When Microcenter had their $100 off a 360 thing last week a number of friends at work who were on the fence snagged one up.

HD DVD is going to pull out in the long run.

I'm thinking both are going to fail if Apple comes up with a HD delivery service. If not then I think both formats aren't going anywhere. The companies involved make too much in licencing to shut things down. In a few years you'll see the "dual format" HD players and at that point people won't care if their buying a BluRay or HDDVD. The only thing that might start changing their mind would be different content on the two formats. Maybe things will take form when their interactive layers become active.

From what I understand, the HDA1 and HDXA1 are both closeout now, and we are awaiting Toshiba's Gen 2 players - which are supposed to be (from early reports) better in every way than the Gen 1. That's saying something, because I liked the G1 players a lot. The stock issue (finding one) is also supposed to be fixed with the G2 players...Toshiba is promising to deliver as many as we need.

Also, Sony Blu-Ray is now (according to people in the know) set to arrive late October / early November...take that for what you will.

Not to mention Sony plans to hoard all the blue laser diodes for the PS3s and not share many with the companies making the BluRay players.

well, for me, i won't buy an xbox360 because i despise microsoft (working in the IT field makes you really hate microsoft). so that leaves the ps3 or wii, neither of which are very appealing right now. i am also in no way interested in replacing my dvd player for at least 2-3 years unless a hd-dvd or blu-ray drive comes with something else i buy (like a ps3). so, i guess i'll just save money for the next couple of years and buy nothing. very disappointing how sony messed up the ps3...

The way you feel about Microsoft (being in the IT field) is the same way I feel about Sony (being in the CE field). Not because they put-out bad products...far from it, much like Microsoft. They just have a...how to put it...heavy handed way of doing business.

PS3 will sell-out, no question. Blu-Ray will probobly get a tremendous bump from being on-board...that's all great. I guess it's the fact that I feel that I need to shower after I talk to a Sony rep...they just come-off as "dirty"...you know?

Like the engineering dept. for example...

Sony hard drive camcorder - direct rip-off of the JVC Everio
Sony DVD cam - direct rip-off of the Hitachi DVD cam (a year after saying they had no intrest in the DVD cam market at all).
Sony SXRD - direct rip-off of the JVC D-ILA

Then there is the endless list of "proprietary" formats they have "invented"...

Beta
MicroMV
SACD
Digital 8
Blu-Ray
MiniDisk
Mini CD (Mavica)
UMD

It's just stupid. We could get into the "motion sensor" in the PS3 controller, the "guide button" in the middle of the same controller, the analog sticks ripped right off an N64 joypad on the second revision of the PSX pad, ect...but I won't.

Good products...terrible PR....both inside and outside of the industry.

I'm no fan of MS either. My wife has a Windows box here at the house but I'm planning on replacing that with a MacBook/Pro soon. Then I'll be an OSX or Linux only house. The 360 for me just works well. When they release the fall update for the 360 then I should be able to stream videos from my Mac to the 360. I'm really looking forward to that (if possible).

I know what you mean about Sony being "dirty". It seems like all they do is talk about how much the PS3 can do until it gets closer to the release date. Then everything changes. I've got plenty of Sony equipment in my house but I imagine it might all get phased out over the next 5 years.

Now that I see that Sony has reversed their stance on allowing porn to be distributed on blu-ray, I take back my statement about blu-ray winning over hd-dvd. Without porn, blu-ray doesn't stand a chance. I'm old enough to have seen betamax fail, and then mini-disc fail, and the umd is not doing anything.... I guess Sony just doesn't know how to let a good product get to market.

Sony sold Tobisha a diode plant.

Have you had your admin creditials yanked for this statement? :)

Time is a wonderful thing isn't it. PS3 outsold XBox last month and seems be getting even stronger. So now what I want to know is when are the admins going to add a PS3 tag option in the forum profile tool?

Are you saying this board is against the PS3? I've got a PS3 and Scott is considering buying one as well. I'll still say the XBox is ahead as far as games and overall gameplay. The XBox Live service is very well executed. Most people buying a PS3 recently are doing so for the Blu-Ray player and not as much for the game console.

We can add a PS3 tag option in the profile tool. It's not really the same as you are much more connected with XBox live and by entering it into your profile we can pull your gamercard showing things like acheivements. If there is a similar system for the PS3 that I haven't found, by all means let us know and we will. Otherwise, it's just an information field that can be as easily stated in a signature.

I wouldn't mind adding some PS3 tags though so I can see how the PS3 friend system works. I don't know anyone personally with a PS3 to add.

No .. not saying the board is against it. I don't have any XBox experience so I can't knock it. I know it's very popular. I did by my PS3 for the Blu-ray player and didn't really know what all it did until I had it hooked up. I really am digging it though. I was really impressed with the media center and downloadable demos/trailers aspect The XBox definitely has allot more games but PS3 is definitely coming around fast. They recently released some sort of SDK which will make it easier for developers to "get 'er done". Also there is a rumored PS3 update coming soon that will allow the XMB to be accessed mid game. Hopefully when 'Home' is released it will go over bigger than it has in Beta.

I didn't realize the gamercard connection until after my post. It is a cool feature of XBox and the board. I don't know of anything similar to it with the PS3. I guess I can wish and hope :) . I agree that without the connection, a PS3 addendum to an existing signature is as good as anything

If you figure it out you could certainly add me (reefbone)

Got my PS3 a couple weeks ago when Toshiba officially threw in the towell. I am still trying to get it to work as a media center extender, but can't get it to work for the life of me. Of course my 360 is my extender of choice, but just wanted to toy around and see how the PS3 did as well. One day I'll get it working!

I use Tversity to stream video and WM11 for everything else. Seems to work well. My DirectTV convertor (HR21-700) can access both as well but doesn't do as well ( Poor quality). I was really impressed with how great my photos(DSLR) looked on the new HDTV (40XBR4).

I'll add you to my list! You'll likely be the first on it!

If they add the ability to access the menu bar and friends lists mid game, it would be a good start. With the Xbox, I can see what all of my friends are doing, start private chats, invite them to my game or join theirs, without having to go back to the main menu. That aspect is something that Xbox live definitely does very well.

There are definitely things I like about the PS3. The 1080p trailer downloads are very high quality. I like the hardware (the console itself) a bit more as it just seems to be a bit higher quality (though I'm probably biased from the hardware issues I've had with the 360 and the my PS3 is still very new). It also runs much quieter and cooler than my 360.

I like the built in bluetooth and internet browser. The browser works pretty well, I think better than the Wii's browser, and allows for multiple browser windows to be open at once. It's also very easy to switch between windows. The bluetooth allowed me to grab an extra bluetooth keyboard I had laying around it picked it up right away so I can use that for my browsing and other typing needs.

I'm a bit annoyed at the lack of IR though, so I can't use my Harmony remote for watching movies. I also don't like that the batteries aren't removable in the controllers. I have the charging station for my 360 batteries and I always have freshly charged batteries waiting so I never have to resort to the USB connection.

I've only started to mess with it, but I really like the PSP connection abilities. I've loaded a couple of complete PS1 games as well as some PSP demos right from the PS3. The remote play also seems very cool, though it is a bit laggy for me usually. I'd really like if I could watch DVD's and BR movies from it as well.

Does the PS3 have a "gamercard" like function that can be found online? If so, I can just modify my Xbox360 code to pull in the card/profile for the PS3 and add an area for the profile to include your PS3 username. If not, I could just have it pull your username so when someone clicks on the icon, the name is displayed.

This site allows you create sig gamercards similar to the 360 one we use: http://www.tripletags.com/index.asp
