View Full Version : Steelers OTA in this area?

Just moved from Akron, OH to Granville, OH and used to get OTA Steelers' games out of Youngstown, OH. I get a ton of OTA HD/nonHD channels out of Columbus, but not sure if any will show the Steelers. Is there a channel East of here that airs the Steelers that we are able to pick up? I get the feeling that the Browns are the primary team for Columbus on Sundays.
Thanks

Browns and the Bungles are the top teams, but we do get a good amount of Steelers games.

You'll see the steelers when they 1) play the browns or the bengals, or 2) when their game doesn't conflict with either the browns or the bengals games.
I have some steeler fan friends that get livid when the steelers aren't on TV here in Columbus. I tell them that when the TV stations in Harrisburg PA start showing the browns or the bengals they'll have a right to complain.

Very true Festivus, but it isn't the way you treat the defending Super Bowl Champs. So nobody knows of any available OTA brodcasts from the East that will broadcast the Steelers? I was trying to avoid paying the ransom fee to NFL ticket on Directv. Thanks

None that I know of that you'll be able to pick up around here. The horizon blocks anything. I've tried to get the Browns out of Toledo when WBNS decides to show the Bengals. No luck. And I live closer to Toledo than those in Columbus. I think that 70 miles is roughly the magic distance but I'm not certain. Go here to find out for certain:

I'm right there with you on the direct tv ransom fee. I'll never pay it out of principle. Another scheme where the fans suffer.

Thanks Festivus. I am aware of Antennaweb.org, I used it to find stations in Akron. I was only 70 miles from Youngstown and was able to get the Steelers every Sunday OTA. I pulled the trigger just a few minutes ago on the Sunday Ticket (I can't live with missing the Steelers) and got a great offer. I got the HD-DVR (free), 5 LNB (free), NFL Ticket (normal price), Super Fan (free), HD TV package (1st 4 mos. free), and install (free). My bill only increases by $10/month. Thanks for the feedback. This a great forum. We didn't have anything like this in Northeast Ohio, just the AVS forum. That is how I got linked to HD Columbus.

Sounds like a great deal! I canceled the ST earlier this year because I was pissed about the price increase. I just called retension to see what they could do and the most they were willing to give me was the Super Fan for free (big deal, I was going to get that for free anyway because I paid full price last year  ). I said thanks, but, no thanks. Perhaps I'll try another CRR tomorrow.

Thanks Scott. It's probably not the best deal of the century, but I wanted to upgrade to an HD-DVR and this way I get alot of extras that total less than the equipment would have been outright to buy. I'm getting the HR10-250 and the HR20-700S is due out anytime for the last 3-4 months now. This way if I do have to pay for the new box then there is no money invested in the HR10 and the 5 LNB is already in place. Very good site you have here, very informative.

The HR10-250 is still $199 through their lease program (after $100 MIR), so, I'd say that you at least covered the cost of the ST. I was hoping to get the same deal--especially the 5 LNB dish. Hard to believe I paid $1,000 for something they're giving away for free :o

Sound like DirectTV is doing whatever it takes to sign up new folks. I paid $200 up front to get the Dish HD DVR. Actually, $250 up front then $50 off the first bill.
What it the normal price now for that NFL Sunday Ticket or whatever it's now called?

The price is $249 (up front, or, 5 monthly payments of $49.80)--BUT--this does not include any of the HDTV games--for this "feature" you need to purchase the "Superfan" package at an additional $99 (this was just added as a paid "feature" last year, it was included the year before).

NFL Sunday Ticket is $250, Super Fan is $99 (have to have NFL Ticket to add Super Fan) and the HR10-250 HD-DVR is approx. $300-400 (not including any rebates, etc.), so for someone like myself trying to guarantee that I see the Steelers every week and wanting to upgrade (to HD anyway) to take advantage of my TV, then I think that I came out ahead in only paying a total of $250 for the Ticket, Super Fan, HD-DVR, 5LNB, and installation. I agree with people that currently DirecTV is really only the most valuable to people who want to see a specific team every week otherwise there are much cheaper or easier ways to watch HDTV. I quite enjoy receiving OTA broadcasts because the picture quality and clarity are unmatched due to very little if any compression (and NO monthly fees or contracts:D ).

I moved here 8 years ago from Pittsburgh and if it wasn't for Directv and the NFL package I would have gone crazy. That is the only way to get Steeler games other than the select few that are aired. The price has drastically increased over the past few years, but I would pay pretty much anything. I told my wife it was cheaper than going to every game, because tickets are insane.

Well I thought last night's game looked pretty good OTA wise. Nice game too!

Nice game, except for the final result. :-)
$250 is steep. If you're a steeler fan in Columbus, you get to see at least 6-8games every year OTA. 2 browns games, 2 bengals games, and the nationally televised games like last night. So if you get the sunday ticket for the other 8-10 games you're paying at least $25/game. Sure, you'll watch some other games using the sunday ticket but you wouldn't get it if not for the steeler games.
$25 is a high ppv price for a regular season nfl game in my opinion. And there's no bigger NFL fan than me. Just seems like the NFL is ripping off fans. If you can split it among friends it's not too bad, but still... I guess that the convenience of being able to sit at home and not have to go to a bar is worth something too.

I hear you Festivus, but my point is that I wanted an HD-DVR & 5LNB anyway so I would have paid more than $250 for the equipment alone so the NFL Ticket/Super fan is just a bonus. This is my 1st time ordering it and I have been a customer with Directv for over 5 years and never needed it (and I always said the NFL is ripping us off, too) for the Steelers games. While living in Akron I could pull in OTA Youngstown channels (approx. 70 miles from Akron, and 170 miles from Central OH) and could see every game for free. I just can't live with not seeing the Steelers play and didn't want to go through the horror of turning on the TV Sunday and hearing "Welcome to the Browns/Bengals game" (that does not make for a very inviting sound for watching football). After watching the game last night in OTA HD and that just as stunning Defense who wouldn't want to guarantee watching the Steelers every week in HD. Festivus you will see the light and come to the Steelers side.

Ha! Only if the NFL were to downsize to 2 teams, the Ravens and the Steelers.
Joey Porter is almost as annoying as Ray Lewis. Almost...

Joey Porter doesn't stab people as an offseason hobby like Ray Lewis "allegedly". He is a solid teammate and does it for the team and not personal recognition. I have never heard him talk about being in the Hall of Fame every chance he gets too, like Ray 'it's all about me' Lewis. They are night and day in the team atmosphere.
festivus

I won't defend Ray Lewis, that's for sure. But I'll praise Hines Ward or Troy Polamalu long before I ever praise Joey Porter.
Didn't Porter get shot outside of a Denver bar about 3 years ago? I wonder if he was hitting a double biceps pose when it happened?
Sorry, man. He's a good player but he has a big mouth. But then again so does Kellen Winslow. Every team seems to have one. We'd better stop discussing football stuff on an HD board, eh?:D

Next up for the Stillers is a monday night game at Jacksonville on ESPN.
As said before, if CBS had the doubleheader this week, and pittsburgh didn't play til the late game (or against an NFC team), you'd get them OTA in columbus.
Week|OTA |My reasoning.
2 NO on MNF (ESPN - HD!)
3 Yes vs. Cincy
4 bye
5 Yes -SNF (NBC)
6 Yes (CBS has dblheader - cincy is early and browns have bye)
7 NO (fox has cincy and dbl header, WBNS will take browns as OTA game)
8 NO (fox has cincy, Pitt same time as cleveland)
9 NO Pitt plays same time as cleveland
10 Yes - fox has dbl header and pit is @ NOLA
11 NO Pitt at browns same time as cincy @ NOLA
12 NO cincy at browns same time as Pitt at Ravens
13 YES fox - tampa @ pitt (cle and Cin both on CBS)
14 NO thursday NFLNET game--cle@Pit
15 NO cincy on MNF CBS has both Cle @ ravens same time as CAR @ PIT
16 YES Stillers early, Bengals Late, Browns on Fox
17 YES Pit @ cincy
I could be off on the double headers, but I think this is your best OTA scenario for seeing the Steelers in HD.

Nice work on the schedule Gruxx. As I suspected there as at least 1 NO on the schedule to not see the Steelers and that is why I paid the ransom fee for the NFL Ticket.

CBS has typically shown the Browns/Steelers game over Bengals games in the past (before last season, the Browns were always the favorite in a tie) because the fan-base for both teams in Central Ohio adds up to more than the Bengals fan-base. I'm predicting this came to be a YES.
festivus

I agree with Scott re week 11. Typically, WBNS will show the Steelers anytime they play the Browns or the Bengals, regardless of the records of the 3 teams.
Re the fan base, I think that there are a bit more Browns fans around Columbus than Bengals fans. At least on the north side where I live. But since the Bengals are doing so well and the Browns now stink (where do they find these offensive linemen!?! Poor Charlie Frye looks like Fran Tarkenton), the Bengals can draw the bigger audience. It's all about the ratings.
