I want an OTA tuner for ABC/FOX (yep TW cust here) and can get the SAMSUNG SIR-TS160 on eBay for $54 shipped.
Does anyone know if it needs to be "activated" or needs a card for it to receive OTA HD?

The OTA/cable and satellite tuning functions of this unit are independent. You need not subscribe to DirecTV to use it.

I am amolst certan that you have to have a dish pointing to the 101 bird and have a card in the slot. You don't however have to activate it. I could be wrong though. Perhaps Timcerdible here could whip out the old box in give it a shot?

I used my RCA receiver without a satellite for a while until I got it installed. It worked fine after I went into the setup and told it there wasn't a satellite hooked up. I would imagine it would be the same for that unit, but can't guarantee anything.
