I have a Toshiba 34HF83 HD television that is almost 3 years old and has a DVI input. Over the past couple of weeks I have been looking for a new DVD player and since the last time I purchased one (4 years ago) and noticed that many now come with upconversion throu an HDMI port. I have been assured that HDMI and DVI are compatible through the proper cable. All that being said I have tried 3 units with upconversion (Panasonic, Sony, and Toshiba) with none of them working through the HDMI port. All that I get when switched to DVI is a flicker of the screen but no picture but when I switch to component I get a great picture. Using the same cable I connected my Direct TV HD box and it worked great. In the owner's manual for the Toshiba it stated that HDMI is an evolving technology and is not compatible with all devices. Am I doing something wrong or is ther a resource for more accurate information?

The Oppo 971 has upconversion and DVI out. When I bought one last summer, it came with a DVI-DVI cable. Now they offer either a DVI-DVI cable or a DVI-HDMI cable.
