Hi all, new member here.
I just wanted to spread the news on Road Runner Lite because I was never aware of it. Basically, they just limit your download and upload rates and it's like $15 cheaper a month (I believe it's still faster than DSL). Since I only really use the internet for browsing and e-mail, I haven't seen any noticable change in the service. It's weird that you don't really see this prominantly advertised on the TWC site, I noticed it as part of one of their promotional bundles w/ digital cable and phone. If you want to save on your cable bill, give it a shot.

Typical TW brainwashing. ATT DSL is the same speed if not faster than TW Roadrunner. Upshot is that we only charge 12.99 a month!

I have ATT DSL - used to have Road Runner (for a looong time) - I agree 100% with nakedeye. I think my DSL is faster actually, than RR was (and it's a 4th of the price).
Point is...if your not getting RR "comped" in a bundle pack, then DSL is a far, far, far better deal.

DSL is definitely faster than RR Lite, but I have to use cable because I don't have a land line, so RR Lite is the best deal for me.

My RR connection had about 4Mbps down and the AT&T DSL has about 2Mbps down. I don't believe they've turned on the new ADSL+ service in our neighborhood. They said I'm not eligible for the "elite" service at my house. Any idea Nakedeye when I should be able to upgrade to a better speed?

You are on ADSL2+ but I have no Idea when they are going to conditon the lines for you cross box. I unfortunitly have not returned to work yet and will not for a few months, sorry.
Back to the OP, RR Lite I belive is capped at 1.5 I belive? Cableguy could you help out here? ATT DSL is 1.5, but they dont share any sort of hub like RR does and our DSL can go (and does) faster than the rated speed (see zelig2). Also like I said, how can you beat 12.99?

The price is great and so far I've not had any blackouts in DSL service unlike when I switched from RR. I've not noticed any real performance issues from switching.
How much of an effect do crappy phone lines that are wired into the house make to the sync rate/speed of the DSL service? The wires I'm hooked up to right now look overly crappy and put in by someone who wasn't in the telecom business.

well, the rate limit is only half of the story with regards to the speed you get on cable modem. with dsl, there is nobody else on the line except you, so you always get your speed (unless the upstream connection is clogged, which is not very likely). however, with cable modem, you have to contend with everyone else on the cable in your collision domain, which causes lost packets that have to be resent and affect real throughtput. so, even though you may have a 5mbs rate limit on cable modem, and 3mbs on dsl, chances are that dsl will actually outperform cable modem. it really depends on how many people are in your cable modem collision domain (and where i live in delaware, they had way too many customers on the same collision domain, i could see 150+ dhcp requests per second on my cable, and between 5pm-8pm on a weekday it was almost unusable, but on sunday morning, it was great).

I was downloading at 4Mbps numerous times and I did periodic speed checks on my system to see the performance. I usually got around 4Mbps for each of those checks during my 4+ years of RR. I never had a speed problem with RR only when the network went down for me. I don't think I used the full bandwidth a whole lot anyways so I don't feel I'm loosing anything with DSL. Maybe I just live in an area where people don't use a lot of internet access.

It can affect it alot. Best thing to do is to use a cat 5 rated line straight from a splitter in your nid up to the modem. dsl will travel down all path ways in your house. youd be suprised how much loop length there is in their. also take in to affect all the junk on the line.
if you see a tech around you can possibly con him into cutting off the out end of your pair for a significant inprovment as well.
