Why is WBNS not showing the Browns game on Digital 10-1? I am forced to watch it on D* analog. I get D* HD, but that is showing regular broadcasting not the Brown's game!

As I was watching the Indy/St Louis game, they mentioned that the game was blacked out locally because it was not sold out. I assume the Cleveland game was treated similarly.

I e-mailed the WBNS director of operations, and this is the response I received...
Chad,
The company producing the Browns games is not producing them in HDTV.
This is beyond the control of WBNS.
Should the games have been available in HD, we certainly would have
broadcast them in HD. Since they're not, we're using our digital channel
to give our viewers a choice between football or Big Brother (which many
are upset we are preempting.)
I hope this better explains the situation.
Thank you for writing 10TV Viewer Services.

That's good to know! It never occurred to me to check the analog feed.

Well what piss's me off is they have 5 sub ch on the Digital. use one for the Browns game. It would still give a better picture than the analog feed. WBNS does this crap all time and last year with games too.

I agree with what they did. If a game is not in hd, they should use the digital chanel to show primetime network hd. stick the game on analog

You may have noticed the CBS picked up WKYC (NBC) out of cleveland and was showing the game the the wkyc bugs. Since it was done by the local Cleveland station it was not HD.

I'm also with you on this one. If they push it to another of their sub-channels, it would have made the picture quality worse from lack of bandwidth.

My OTA sub-ch are better than analog by a good bit. Its like back during March-Madness. Everyone bitched about the quality with all the sub-chs the quality on those ch were still better than analog. I can't speak for cable, but D* analog on the locals is bad (just the locals). Now D* HD locals are comparable to OTA. But that's my opinion. Everyone's situation is different.

you may like it that way shure.
problem comes from the people who dont want to watch browns, but want to watch the hd from the network. the sub channel will screw that to hell

Well that why they have 10.1-10.5 for mulitcast! Bring up two then. One for the Browns one and the other shows on the other.

I thought they handled the situation well, and the quality of the video in analog was excellent.
One of the reasons I love my tv is that when properly tweaked, given a good source, NTSC feeds can look quite good. So much so that you'll forget it's not HD (that is quickly realized the instant you switch to an HD feed, but still, it's nice to not have a constant reminder that the quality of what you're watching is poor.) Afterall, you're watching the show, not the quality of the show (most of the time).
And this game in particular, was not a quality viewing experience (but hey preseason doesn't mean anything, right?) :)

This concerns me a bit. So, we're saying that wbns digital shows network show while wbns analog shows browns (pre-season only of course). I'm switching to Dish on Saturday. With my OTA antenna, will the dish receiver handle the analog feed in or does it do only digital? I'm getting the HD DVR. I 'm asking because my samsung OTA receiver does only digital (I think).

I can't speak for Dish I have D*, but with my new H20 I can't get OTA analog, just OTA digital. Yes you should be concerned about it, because this happens with the OSU basketball games too. Last season I got the games on analog only. The OTA digital was the network shows. That's my point on the whole thing. WBNS does this all time. And quess what more people would like to see the Browns not the nework show.

Can't you get the analog locals from Dish?

I'm getting locals from Dish but they're digital. They had better be digital. Isn't Dish all digital? Or does Dish take the "analog" programming and convert it to their satellite-based, digital feed? This is somewhat confusing.
The one time that this would be great is for bengals/browns conflicts. But of course the NFL won't allow stations to do this for reg season games. The NFL is really getting kind of crazy with their coverage agreements.

Dish is sending it to you digital, but that's the analog feed from WBNS and with all the locals its that way. That's why D* is make a big deal out their LOL HD feeds, its the digital feed from the stations not the analog feed.

Cool. Good news for Browns fans with Dish locals. So now I can watch the 4th string center get run over by the nose tackle...

Hey Robbie,
A fe years ago many people were VERY upset b/c they showed the sports (OSU/pre season browns) on the digital feed and preempted the network. You'd be suprised but many more people want to watch the network hd than OSU. So they struck a ballance by showing the games on the analog and the network on the digital. We should be galed taht we have 2 staions that listen to us here in town. As far as lighting up the multicaster, I, along with countless others, hope the leprichauns sneak in and bash all of the equipment to smitherens. It kills the hd picture. WBNS is the ONLY true hd signal at full bit rate laft here in town and i dont want to see it go.
sorry for all the tpo;s today........ vicoden for my wisdom theeth removal is making me shaky... lol

Hey nakedeye,
Don't want to get into a pissin contest, but I think you are wrong. take the whole Columbus market I just bet you more people will want the OSU/Browns. More people have acquired HDTV and understand the ota digital thing now. Just the other day I hooked up an antenna for my Landscaper and his wife so they could get the ota HD on their new HDTV. The reason OSU and Browns games. Numbers change. As far as the mulitcaster Most people cannot tell the different or see a difference on the PQ. I can't speak for your set up, but on mine the PQ is still outstanding even with the mulitcast. Chs 4, 6 and 28 all mulitcast and all the stations still look great. On my street a lone I was out talking to my neighbors (drinking some brews in public!!!) all were mad about the WBNS thing and everyone has different set-ups. (TW, D*, Dish, WOW). Like I said no pissin contest, because I think this is a good discussion (unlike SatellitesGuys were you get bash for everything). I would love to have you over to my set so you can see what I am talking about vis veia. Oh is the wisdom teeth or to much brews!! HaHaHa.

hell there is no pissin contest, you out rank me anyway! right chief!
shure many people have different opinions, but I do know that the reason why it is the way they do it now is b/c of users complaints. If you would like it to change, simply email Frank Wilson. They do listen at WBNS.
I myself was actulay caught off guard and had to disconnect my antenna from my tivo and put it directly into it atsc/ntsc tuner on the tv (very hard to do on my set up). I missed the first 12 mins of the game.
of course the only reason i wanted to watch was to see the eagles kick ass
