I saw the movie this afternoon at our local theater. I found it a complete bore and could not wait until it finished. Kevin Spacey was a boring Lex Luthor; the plot was lame and pointless.
Putting in 3D would not help if the content is not worth seeing.

i saw it on the imax, the effects were really good and the sound was awesome, story was a little short especially with lex wanting land again.. i wont spoil it, but bottom line it was decent movie but not nearly as good as batman was, my top 3 superhero movies are, 1. spidey 2 2.batman begins and 3.xmen-2. Remember these movies are good entertainment, if you go looking for complex plots and overwhelming story lines well, i alway find them a little short. With the exception of xmen 2 which had a great story. Any way just my opinion, i know some people will not agree but that is what i expect out of these types of movies. Next big test will be the wolverine movie, they better do that one right...

I enjoyed the movie. I wasn't expecting a great story like DBailey said. I thought they got a lot of the "feel" right though. I liked how they interspersed things from the old superman, those were actually some of the best parts. I liked the new guy as Superman, though I felt he lacked a little personality as Clark. I still think they need to do a Superman Next or something with the Smallville cast.

I went ahead and moved this discussion into a new thread so that we can freely talk about the movie....
I agree with snodgrass23, I really enjoyed the movie. I too wasn't expecting a great story; but, the story was enough (doesn't anyone remember how S-L-O-W the first Superman was?). I'm still on the fence about the kid. My initial impression was that I liked it, but, having just watched the first 2 movies recently, there were certainly some holes--like, how did LL realize that it was Supe's kid--I mean besides the piano incident, how did she just assume? Wasn't her memory wiped of everything that happened when they hooked up on faux Krypton? I thought that maybe this would have been a good ending to the third and final installment of the new series--now, they have to incorporate this new story line throughout.
More on the plot... The land storyline was a little familiar. I did like how they included some good information concerning the hows and whys of the crystals bonding with our minerals to make land masses. I was hoping for a little more of the Brando/Jor-El archived scenes--I guess we'll have to wait for Donner's uncut version of II this fall (being released as a box set with ALL of the Superman titles up to this point--yes, even III and IV http://hdcolumbus.net/vb-hdtv/images/icons/icon13.gif). I don't really care for the Rich White (Cyclops), LL, and CK love triangle.
I really thought that Brandon Routh channeled Chris Reeve flawlessly--I was a little worried at first when he didn't have too many speaking scenes; but, he certainly delivered later on. Bosworth by far is my favorite LL--sorry Margot and Erica Durance or Erika Parker--whatever your name is. Spacey was awesome and played the part flawlessly.
Overall, I really liked the film. Singer did a great job of keeping the feel of the original series alive. I thought the special detail to the physics involved with some of Supes' powers was also a nice touch--especially the sound barrier halo. I'm interested to see how the kid storyline is developed in future installments. Keep Spacey coming back, drop Cyclops, and bring on Bizzaro!
Oh, and there should have been more damage done to Metropolis and LL should have been REALLY beaten up after her plane ride!

I also went to see the IMAX 3D version of the movie. I thought it was a good movie overall. After saving the plane, as he was standing in the doorway as the crowd went wild, it was like saying he's back. After 19 years and all the ups and down of getting this movie off the ground, he's back.
I do remember reading somewhere that Singer had left quite a bit of the movie on the cutting floor to bring it down to a decent length of time. I wonder if we're looking at Superman Returns - The Extended Edition sometime in the near future.

The comments indicate, as usual, that one has to see something to form your own opinion; don't depend on the critics.
Given my response to the film [I was bored] I would hate to have had to sit through even more of it.
I did enjoy X-2 and X-3 and I like superhero films, but, I think, you need more than special effects. As in any film you need a good plot and characters you get interested in.
